Has anyone on here had any experiences with equicast?
What type of results did it fetch?
I am asking as one of mine has typical TB feet and we are currently trying this method with him and my farrier says it has worked wonders with others.
So was wondering what experience (if any) you had with this?

Is this made by the same people as Vetwrap? If so I think it's also called Scotchcast. I haven't tried it but am very interested. Husband broke his thumb in january and had his hand splinted with something very similar. They soak the bandage in water, apply it over padding and it sets rock hard in a couple of minutes. He even went ski ing with the thing on so pretty tough.

Let me know what you find out.

You may be able to find out on there, I have had a quick flick through but didn't find any names other than Equicast. If I remember correctly the sealed bag with the wrap/bandage/whatever it is was placed in water then dipped in it immediatly before it was put on. But when I got it out of the wrapper it already felt rather damp and was a very weird material.

Could you let me know how you get on with product.I have a tb with very flat front feet who bruises his heels .He is suffering from a splint at the moment I feel sure this is also caused by his poor feet.Im using natural balance shoes which seem to be helping, his hoof quality is good because I use supplements I would be interested if the product can help with raising the heel. Thanks

Out of interest what suppliments do you use?
I will keep you updated, I can ask my farrier if he thinks it will help with raising heels if you like? As he is out again in 3 weeks.

www.hoofsupplimentsdirect.co.uk I used this hoof product for two years but recently switched to a balancer by top spec that had hoof suppliment in feed.I have taken him of balancer this week because he is a bit fizzy not doing any work because of the splint.I will put him back on it as soon as he returns to work because he is in fantastic condition even with having lots of time off, hes recently had surgery for spavins .Thanks Im really interested in the product if it helps with concussion .

What sort of price is Equicast? It sounds interesting & I think it may be worth discussing with my farrier to see if it will help with some problems I'm having.

Haven't seen Equicast in use, but have seen Perfect Hoof Wear (www.perfecthoofwear.com) which is a similar product, although I think but could be wrong that Equicast can be used with shoes and PHW is for use without.

Certainly approx 7 weeks in PHW improved the feet of my sister's horse and the growth gained was phenomenal. Horse had been unshod but was having a few issues (which he also had when shod in NB shoes hence why he went unshod for a while to recover the collapsing structures).

He was coming up a bit footy after doing really well the year before unshod (he has been ill and been diagnosed with minor thyroid issues, which we think effected his feet hence the downturn in performance). Before considering shoeing him, my sister wanted to improve the structure in his feet, so he could cope better with shoes - last time he was shod, his internal structure was collapsing and he was heading down the navicular route.

Anyway, sorry get to the point. The PHW was applied for 7 weeks - this footy horse was immediately comfortable on all surfaces and when it came off, his feet were fab and he has now happily gone back into shoes for a while, with us happy that his feet are in a strong place to cope with the effects of shoeing.

Not sure but I have heard that PHW comes up cheaper than Equicast, but that would need to be checked out.

I do know it can be obtained in the UK from :

www.aepsupplies.co.uk

And no before anyone accuses me, I have absolutely no interest in pushing PHW over Equicast, just thought it might be of interest.

From what I have read they are similar products, but the Equicast is much more of a cast as the name would suggest and more rigid, so very useful when the foot needs to be stabilised and kept rigid. The PHW is supposed to be beneficial in improving internal structures etc and growth because it is more flexible and allows the foot to flex more normally.

With both I think you need to be careful of infection whilst on, particularly on frogs and certainly with PHW, it is recommended to apply an antibacterial agent before applying the PHW.
