As title. My gelding usually goes 7 weeks between shoeing's and even then usually there is very little growth. But yesterday I was taking a look at his hooves and tbh they were looking a bit crappy.
He'd only been shod 4 weeks ago but they were looking splayed out for want of a better way to describe it. His off side front had started to look as though it was growing over the side of his shoe. I actually think this is more to do with the hard ground than his hooves growing but nevertheless I phoned my Farrier and asked him to come out and take a look before his next planned visit.
However, last night some kids were hanging around the bridlepath behind my lads field and it was winding him up then a friend hacked her mare past the gate and he went ballistic! The result of which was that the offside front shoe was pulled off my him hooning and it has taken both the sides of his hoof with it. I can't find the shoe and two other friends helped me look so I have phoned my farrier again and he's coming friday to sort all four feet. And therein could be the problem I'm worried that there won't be enough hoof left to shoe.
I've done a bit of Googling and found this Keratex hoof repair gunk that claims to be able to rebuild hooves capable of withstanding a nailed on shoe. Can anyone recommend this product or anything else that might be worth me investing in? I'll be everso grateful for your help. N. x

My last cob had very flat, crumbly hooves..... i tried this stuff, and tbh it never stayed where I put it. Ever.

If I knew then what I do now about diet, I am sure his hooves would have been 100% better. I got the info from Feet First by Nic barker and Sarah Braithwaite - and no, you don't have to be barefoot to follow it ;)

I am using aqueous cream with huge success on Shy, as his hooves have been dry and flaky during this hot weather. Sure lots more advice to follow :)

Firstly I think we have the same farrier.

Secondly my mare 2 weekends wore her unshod back feet away so much the same farrier was horrified but still managed to put shoes on her. She did however have huge gaps between the hoof and shoe and he told me to get some Keratex Hoof Putty to fill in the gaps.

I drove 50 miles round trip on bank hol Monday to get the hoof putty as everywhere I called was closed or didn't have any.

I am only about 5 miles away from you, if you would like to borrow my tub of hoof putty you are more then welcome to - a tiny bit goes a long way.

Thanks for the offer Shell, I did have a look into the putty but I wasn't sure if it would be strong enough to fill in the size gaps that George will most likely have between his hoof and the shoe. I'm not kidding when I say that there really doesn't look like there will be enough hoof to nail to :-( and I'm booked to take him showing in 2 1/2 weeks time.
I managed to get the Keratex hoof repair kit and will have to see what Alan says on Friday when he comes to sort the boy out. x

No problem at all

If you decide you want it just let me know. The hoof putty is light green but where dirt has stuck to it it just looks like her hoof now unless you look closely so may work for showing. Blasted horses hey!

It was a bit scary when Alan said he was going to shut his eyes and hope the nails went in properly! He explained he listened to the sound!
