Following on from my previous post someone sent me a PM suggesting I contact Professor Knottenbelt at Liverpool Equine Hospital as he is an expert with eyes and this is his kind reply:

"Extra layers on the cornea” are very rare and could be one of several things including a particularly type of tumour that develops in the corneal epithelium. This is obviously worrying you and it may or may not be the only ting that is worrying your horse. It should be checked out properly Ann! Safety and welfare issues must be considered!!! First we need to find out what this is – I cannot really imagine it from what you describe so either you need to contact another opinion locally or you need to ask to be referred – there are lots of specialist ophthalmologists about but most are dog / cat people.

I am more than willing to see your horse if your vet / you wish to refer to me.

Hope this helps – probably not really but we need to know what this is all about!

I am waiting upon a vets visit to my horse in order to get the all important referral to Professor Knottenbelt. I just hope to God its not a tumour.

The Prof is a saint and will always reply to individual horse owners. He helped me on many occasions with my rescued gipsy cob mare Angel. Good luck and got fingers crossed for a good outcome x

Thanks BOF. I am really suprised that someone as brilliant and knowledgable as he is would have replied to me personally, never mind within half an hour of me sending the email! Totally gobsmacked, it had really restored my faith in humanity. x

My rescued mare was terribly ill with ragwort poisoning. As a last ditch try to find expert guidance, I dropped the Prof an e-mail but it turns out he was in Sweden on a lecture tour so I didn't expect an early reply. Incredibly, he must check his e-mails even in his sleep because he replied within 24 hours. He helped save Angel's life with his experienced and thoughtful reply. Good luck with your horse's eye problem. About 5 years ago, my horse Sunny lost an eye to superficial keratitis, after a desperate 6 month battle to save it. I would have responded to your post but Sunny's problem was so unlike your horse's that I didn't think it would help. If it ever comes to the point where your horse has to have an eye removed, PM me for Sunny's experiences. Nothing but positive all the way!!!!!!
