Can anyone recommend a haulier to travel a horse from Cornwall to East Sussex? And any idea of how much it is likely to cost at all?

The horse is young and not used to travelling long distances. The journey is 5-6 hours in a car. I think the best option is to employ the services of a haulier, where so the horse would have company, be dealt with by professionals and travel in a large horsebox which has got to be more comfortable than a trailer (which is what we have - also do not fancy towing that far).

Thanks for suggestions!

I used Nottingham Horse Transport to move my old horse from Surrey to Yorkshire. It was a few years ago now but they were great, he was in fine fettle when he arrived :)

HI! I cannot remember exactly where they were based, but when we moved our horses from Yorkshire to N.E Scotland, we used Eric Gillies transport, they are proper equine hauliers and are not too expensive. Our horses came up here, had two nights at their yard in Kelso and then came here. They arrived in fantastic condition and the people were very professional. Their lorries are state of the art and I think the horses had a better ride here than we did! Best of luck! I know they cover the entire country so it might be worth looking into

When needing long distance transport for a youngster I found a site that you enter the details of your requirments then it sends it off to all the registered transports and they then get back to you with a quote.

I need transport from Worc to Essex and a company i went with had a pick up from Norfolk to Worc so did me a great deal as meant they had a load both ways. Was nearly half the price of some of the companies that got back to me where they didnt have a load both ways.

Another vote for Gillies. I moved my yearling from the Cotswolds to Glasgow with two nights at theirs in Kelso (driver sickness but they kept me informed all the way). They were fantastic with a youngster who had never been in a lorry. He hopped off at mine cool as a cucumber. Reasonable price and I'd use them again in a heartbeat.

We used ETA to transport my foal from a stud in Devon up to West Sussex (similar journey to yours). Unfortunately though the experience was not good. They arrived at the stud where my foal was (after weaning) at 3am instead of 11am. The owners of the stud had no warning of this and had strange horses wandering around in their yard in the middle of the night as others had to be off-loaded before our foal was loaded. I believe they stopped and stabled the horses for a few hours mid morning. After a journey time totaling 11 hours he finally arrived at his new home, albeit happy but a little exhausted; after all he was only 6 months old and had never travelled more than a hour.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience and were landed with a bill from the stud for the inconvenience; therefore I would never use ETA again. I am sure we were just unlucky though.
