As title...

Trainer, mother, sister and me are now pretty much convinced extremes in behaviour, mood swings etc are all primarily down to hormones. We have spent 3 years tracking them and there is very definately a pattern. From spring-end sept we go through a repeating cycle of normal for a week, vile for a week, cuddly for a week, normal for a week, vile for a week, cuddly for a week..... Come October she is beyond vile and while reasonably normal to hack (excepting extreme separation anxiety if left by hacking partner) she is quite literally impossible to school and is just generally unusually highly strung and grumpy for a solid 6 weeks.

Spoke to vet a year ago and he wanted to see how she went over this last year. He is due up next month so I'm now wondering whether I'd do as well to have him up a month early and get her put on Regumate or similar.

Trainer said there is an injection which does the same thing but only needs administering every 3 months, anyone heard/used this as it's meant to be cheaper and I'd rather have 4 jabs a year then feed a supplement daily??

I have a friend who uses regumate for her competition mare during the spring/summer months and it makes a huge difference.

I have used regumate but only to get mares in season so not the same as what you want it for.

Not sure if friend uses injections or into feed, your vet will advise, but I would certainly look at it as an option.

p.s - I thought you were talking about yourself r a friend to start with...lol....oops

Regumate is magic stuff if you have a very hormonal mare, reading your post that's my mare! Had her on Regumate and stopped the season within a day. From then on different horse, although I missed the cuddly week or so. She was like her second week, just normal! Previous owners said they'd tried Regumate but it didn't work, but I think possibly they weren't giving her enough because it worked for me (she's a big girl so hides her actual weight well). So had her marbled - this may be a follow on option for you, but with mine it didn't stop her seasons although can be succesful. One thing I would advise is to get her scanned internally / manual examination to rule out any cysts or stuff that can cause over hormonal symptoms. How is she over the winter?

Winter she is mostly fine, sharp (but I think she always will be) but once we're over the Oct/Nov hideousness she is generally a poppet. Come Feb/March she starts to bring out the devil horns again...

Out of interest, any ideas on costs? Have heard anything from £20/3months for a jab to £100/month for the oral Regumate???

Just looked at my old bills and was charged 96 quid inc vat for a litre. Wouldn't really be worth putting her on it now, wait until next spring. My mare is usually in season all of April then starts her regular seasons.

I agree, would get her scanned just in case. I have a mare that was an absolute agressive nightmare, and a scan initially showed a tumour on an ovary, that turned out to be a cyst that disapeared. Had to put her on regumate to put her in foal £40 for a 500ml bottle, but since she's foaled has seemed to loose her "I'm going to kill you" face.
