Ive been reading the sarcoid posts with interest and have noticed that some of you are still waiting after 2 months for a confirmed diagnosis! My warmblood has a number of sarcoid with one grown to a size of a tennis ball in his groin. I have been waiting over 3 weeks now with no sign of treatment starting. My vet has chased and she has including myself four other cases waiting for a response. I am concerned about this as this larger sarcoid has grown quickly and dont want to complicate tretment further if it grows bigger if 2 months is the wait!! Interested to hear any others waiting for diagnosis from Liverpool.

Can't help about time waiting. I only waited less than 2 weeks earlier in the year.

If it's tennis ball shaped I'd recomment you get your vet to band it as well as the cream. My friends pony had a similar one. First treated with cream which made it shrink but not fall off. (too big to get band over). Once withered, the vet came back and banded it and it shortly fell off.

3 years ago my horse developed something that could have been a sarcoid, so it was treated as if it definitely was one. He had 4 applications of Liverpool cream with a few days in between each application. I didn't have any photos taken and my vets started the treatment immediately. Worth asking your vet if a photo analysis is necessary or whether treatment can just go ahead.

Box of frogs - the new Liverpool system this year means you have to buy and pay for the cream before you get the protocol - before many practices would just use the creams they got for other cases (there is always plenty left over) and get the protocol from Liverpool. Obviously Liverpool have got smartto this and changed their system. It sounds like your vets just used the creams they already had and protocols for similar cases.

And yes, from a vet's persepctive - have at least 3 cases waiting since January now - and have sent off another 2 last week.

Tell me about it! :(

Been waiting since flipping February, vet was sick of chasing them, I was sick of chasing the vet, they can't get the bile until LU have got back to vets after looking at detailed photos we provided, last I knew the vet the was looking else where for the bile.

But I no longer the have the horse on loan, very annoying though specially when the vet said the one on his eye needed treatment asap, he's since sprouted a fast growing one in the groin area and as well as the others on his body that were already there.

Thanks GR - didn't know that. When a vet is pretty certain that they are dealing with a sarcoid, why can't they just order the "basic" cream? Why do they need LU to tell them what they already know? What are the protocols for? Strange!

I received a call from my vet yesterday and she has received advisable treatment from Liverpool for the smaller sarcoids and nothing for the larger troublesome one?? I have had to buy the cream up front before treatments starts due to this change of system from Liverpool. My vet has suggested to stop further delay waiting from Liverpool for an answer on the larger one is to cream it to shrink it down then band it. By the time the cream arrives and we start it will be over a month. I cant believe some have been waiting since January.
Another question - this is my first time treating sarcoids - how have your horses been through treatment. Have you turned them out? Have you still ridden them if not in an area that tack effects them? Mine is a woosey warmblood so Im preparing for him to tell me!!

If it is not near tack or a joint/crease then you'll probably be fine to ride. My vet gave me 10 days or so wroth of bute incase it made it sore which I gave as it wasn't a million miles away from the girth, she was in the middle of being broken in and is very sensitive so I didn't want to create any problems. Turn out wise our vet advises just to get on with it (althought she doesn't like treating in the summer when flies are around out of preference). As long as it's not somewhere where other horses could touch the cream and get it on them. One horse I know had one on its face so he stayed in for a while after application. Apparently it absorbs quite quickly.

Yes. I've been waiting for about 2 months, and my vet is chasing me up, but they are still being very slow :(

I waited about 6 weeks to get my creams and that was june last year. Having worked at an equine vets though i know it can take a few months to get the creams and treatment protocols back.

Box_Of_Frogs- I dont think there is a standard strength of cream. Professor Knottenbelt looks at each case individually and makes creams up of varying strenths to treat them as he sees best. The protocols tell the vet which strength cream to use on what day, and how many hours between applications. For example, on the worst one my gelding had we used full strength cream applicaton 1 then a 48 hr gap, full strength for app 2 then a 48hr gap, 3/4 strength for app 3 then 24hr gap, full strength for app 4 etc... He had 6 applications of cream in total.

sabab172- i rode my boy throughout his treatments, his main one was on his leg though so didnt interfere with tack but he was fine. The info i had said riding was recommended as long as it didnt interfere with the treatment site as it keeps the circulation going and movement would help to reduce any swelling the creams caused. I was allowed to turnout as normal too. Had to leave him in for a short while whilst the cream absorbed but was fine to go out afterwards. He was covered head to hoof in fly protection though!!

It does get frustrating when you're waiting for them to come back but he does try and get through them as quickly as he can. I sympathise with anyone waiting for creams at the moment, sarcoids can be a real nightmare.

My vet always uses left-overs (and Liverpool has got wise to that one too and put an expiry date on it!) I have a big tub of LC sitting at my vets - which I HOPE I'm not going to need, as Efudix 5% (Fluorourcil) seems to be doing the job on sarcoids on my young stallion (2 on sheath and one on scrotum!) Fortunately I have a direct line to 'God' and don't have to wait for the system. I've sent photos off to DK at 11pm and had a reply next morning!:D

I did have to wait a few weeks for my cream to arrive but aswell as contacting my vets and chasing I was also in contact with Derek Knottenbelt. He always emails back even if he is away on business abroad.

He was extremely helpful and after emailing him at about 10.30pm one night he came back to me within about 10 minutes!

As I understand it they are so busy at the moment and they have so many cases to deal with. My mare had a large sarcoid about the size of a golf ball which grew almost overnight! She also had other smaller sarcoids in and around her inner thighs and one on her chest in between her front legs.

My vet liaised directly with Derek Knottenbelt and decided to de-bulk the large sarcoid, then band it and apply the cream. They also banded the other sarcoids, which were mostly all nodular, and then applied the cream.

It has been a lengthy process and I am only just starting to ride again (treatment started at the end of February 2010) because the chest wound has taken longer to heal than we originally thought.

The cream is made in different strengths depending on the sarcoids. My mare had a pot of full strength and a pot of three quarter strength.

It was a very hard decision for me to make but I hope, fingers crossed, it will keep them at bay for a few more years. I just hope that this potential cure treatment is available soon.
