The Doma Vaquera championships (like Spanish Dressage) were being hosted at the Spanish School of Equestrian Art (not the Spanish riding school). It is a freestyle to music.

Note it is not like dressage but interesting I think!

I've been glued to the live feed. Very high standard this year. I have actually competed in the lower levels of Doma Vaquera in Spain, and have nothing but admiration for the riders and trainers. Knocks "normal", boring old dressage into a cocked hat, IMO.

I've loved it! So much so that I've asked GBPRE if anyone runs it in the UK as I think my older mare would really enjoy it.

The last time I was at the show in Hartpury they put on a sort of "taster" class, and there was a demo with some guy (who wasn't very good)*.

*Ooops! I think it was the chaps in the link above . I'm a member of that group, but they're not very active.

Question from someone who knows little of these things - where does the MCI dressage fit into this? Is it another type of dressage, or can it act as a stepping stone to Doma Vaquera?

No, it's just regular dressage but only open to registered PRE's and PSL's (and crosses, I think), with their own tests, not BD ones. It's all over Europe.

Yes it is standard dressage, although the dressage to music can be done in traditional dress and you can do Spanish walk. The series has a European finals, which is in Italy this year. Unfortunately the European finals are purebred registered PSL or PRE only but part breds can do the UK champs. I like doing the MCI series as you tend to get judges which are more inclined to the Iberian breeds

Probably, since the style of working cattle in what became the American west has significant ties to the Spanish equestrian traditions, due to Spain colonizing that area first.
