Does anyone else have a horse which tends to switch into 'flight mode' really easily. In other words, one which tends to run off when it shies or takes fright at something, rather than just shying normally?

If so, how do you manage it and have you found anything that helps reduce this reaction to a controllable level?

Yes, my horse was like this - still is - I just know how to work with him now.

pm me if you want details of what I did/ do

Only really out in the field.

She's very spooky under saddle but rarely actually takes off/bolts.

Out in the field though she's very easily startled and has jumped out of the field several times when things frighten her.

My last horse was like this... especially when schooling, she was actually better out hacking. Some times she'd bolt and not stop until I jumped off :/
Regular work and not being lulled into a false sense of security... we never got round it fully, in the end I sold her to a more experienced competition home where she could be worked & compete more often at a higher level. This seemed to suit her more. I think it just depends on the individual horse.
sorry I couldn't help really
