Anyone with experience of buying a trained gundog?

Hello all,

We bought a fully trained gundog a year ago, and he is an absolute joy, have had no problems at all.

I am tentatively looking for another, and I am wondering if anyone has had any disappointing experiences when buying a dog that is already trained?

We bought through word of mouth, which of course is always the best, however now I have had one I definitely know more specifically what I want this time. Whereas before we were happy as long as the dog fitted into our family and knew its job, iykwim.

Of course now that I have been working alongside alot of other trained dogs I can see that we were particularly lucky.

Any advice would be gratefully received x

I got mine from friend/trainer at 8mths part trained (cocker) spoke to him about what I wanted and spent time with Sprite also watched how the trainer handled him, commands, voice, whistle etc.

Had a lesson before taking him home and went back for lessons to make sure I was on the right track with him.

I would contact gundog clubs, gamekeepers especially as the season is nearly finished and dogs will be moving on.

Otherwise UK gundogs is a good site, by the way what are you looking for spaniel/lab?

Thanks for your reply, I have spread the word at the shoots that I attend.

I am looking for a 3/4 year old dog really, something that can be used straight away, and ideally a springer
