Any advice or happy ending stories please ;)

My Cob has had been coughing and short of breath for about 6 weeks now. Vet came out initially and gave him an injection, Danillon and Ventipulmin. Didn't do anything. Vet been again- on another Ventipulmin and Sputisomethingorother.

Only had it in three feeds so far-after very very careful mixing of feed and holding bucket to ensure he ate every last bit! (meds at £60 a pop- wowsas!)

On the last visit vet mentioned she'd be willing to try antihistamines but she didn't rate them herself. She recommended scoping but as I understand it it might not tell us a great deal...? Correct me if I'm wrong- I have alot to learn about this.

She also mentioned steriods but didn't think they'd be suitable- he has a history of laminitis.

The laminitis is managed with diet and exercise but now he is on a postage stamp whilst he can't be ridden- and looking mightily peed off. :(

Feel utterly crap. Please send any spare get well vibes to Sid please (we're in Derbyshire).
Ta.

I have a pony with SPAOD, he's had it every summer for the past six summers (he's fine in the winter). Has your vet not recommended trying inhalers? they are steriods but much lower risk than injected or oral as they get straight to the lungs.

Try a nose net for the field, equilibrium make good ones. I presume he's not on hay or if he is it's soaked? Inhalers can help in some cases. We have a horse on our yard like this at the moment, in the end the owner turned him away and he's come back in much better, we and vet think he also had a low grade respiritory virus.

My mare is better off up high in a windy field, she has haylage only. She has a full facemask in the summer with the pollen season (for her that's March-July) and nose net and fly mask to ride in. I also pop a bit of vaseline up her nostrils first thing and that seems to help.

My horse has this, initially it started when we moved to a new yard near some rapeseed. He was on ventipulmin and inhalers. His breathing wasnt too bad at this point and he was blowing his nostrils & had a heave line but not all the time. Fast forward a few months and hes still blowing his nostrils and has a heave line. I had to drop the inhalers because he wasnt happy with it. Hes been turned away and lives out 24/7 and I thought hed be better by now but hes not.

My sister's cob has summer allergies and we use the feel good thirty breathing liquid, we find that makes a big difference to his breathing.
Also try using haylage that is soaked. My mare has developed dust allergies following a pneumonia and she even needs the haylage soaked down.

Been there done it all with my horse! Sadly I didn't have a good outcome but lots u can try!
Might b worth a scope just 2 c exactly how bad it is then makes it easier 2 tailor meds etc 2 it.
Def speak 2 vet bout inhalers less chance of laminitis with then & can b v good- o use with proper horse mask not the wee baby 1s get a lot more in2 lungs
Also speak 2 vet bout cavalesse (sp?) can't remember wot it officially marketed for but has been shown 2 b useful in breathing allergy cases
