Took 9 yr old son for a hack tonight and he wears boxes under his jods. Jods are a size or so too big to allow some room for his comfort but he said his balls were rather sqwished and ached. He has a seat saver for his comfort but having never been a boy myself I have no idea what the most comfortable gear is for a boy or how to advise him to best deal with the problem.

I suggested jogging bottoms tomorrow and trying to sit on his seat bones more is there anything else anyone can suggest?

Advice and guidance greatly appreciated.

My husband came to riding later in life and had a male instructor... "proper" old-fashioned y-fronts and supportive trousers - so probably best not to have joggers. It's also a matter (I'm told) of practice, the better he gets the less likely he is to have a bang. On that note though, the instructor told him that it will happen from time to time and you just have to grit your teeth. My husband hasn't been riding very long but no longer complains about his nuts, so that's nice.

Good old Y Fronts. Men normally resort back to them I believe for riding - My OH certainly does on the rare occasions he gets on the horse. He says he has to keep it all together and contained, when there is too much freedom things get, erm, caught

Thank you , I did wonder if we needed more supportive undies ;) He may not be too impressed but I shall order him some online from M&S and see how we get on. He is also trying to learn how to canter so that may not have helped tonight as he was bobbing about a bit more in the saddle.

tucked up out of the way is best with the men i have taught and teaching them to sit up and not perch forward. would something to hold on to enable him to sit stiller in the saddle whilst he learns the movement needed for canter?

Tee hee! I am having the same problem with my 11yr old son!

He refuses to wear any underwear other than boxers, so will be learning the hard way......!

Tight pants and jodhs or breeches that hold things in place to stop them getting squished according to my husband. Also make sure that the saddle is big enough, my husband is more comfortable since we got a larger seat on our saddle.

My son often rides in joggers but snug pants are a must. Be warned - there is a "dead zone" between kids & mens size jods which only joggers & ladies fit can fill.

My stepson is 16 and had been riding for a few years now , but your question is something I've never thought about or come up as an issue . But him and my hubby wear the short tight boxers , not the cotton type but more like tight fitted snug ones so maybe that's why it's not been an issue . They both now I think about it prefer to wear breeches - where as I ride in anything ...! That's maybe why?' Lol - be warned ... When he grows out of "kids" jods there are no teens breeches avail for leggy skinny lads so you have to search high and low for plain maids breeches which is hard ! Everything has a hunt of diamanté on these days

Boys briefs ordered and some padded cycling shorts things too, I did try and find the breeches mentioned on Decathlon but scrolled through pages and all I could find where Jods?

He did say he had a mega wedgie - Poor chap! His saddle is plenty big enough as I ride said pony in it and my posterior is considerably larger than his ;)

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply and given me guidance with this delicate issue.

From personal experience, Lycra will be his friend. If you dare enter the realm of Primark mens section, they do fab ones, they look silky, and are perfect for riding.
But he will very quickly learn to sit properly.
Is it perhaps the reason we see a lot of men at the top of show jumping? meant in jest obviously! But having had a young horse put in a larger jump than expected and smack me with the pommel, I soon learnt.
