Mr B has had a bit of a cough on and off for the past few weeks, not got a snotty nose, seems well enough in himself but will cough a bit when schooling but once he's had a good snort he is OK but I heard him cough in the stable this afternoon. He's out at night from 17.00 - 08.00 and in on haylage during the day as he hates the flies etc. He's on a rubber floor with a bed of straw pellets. I think it's the weather/high pollen count as even I have had the sneezes and I don't get hay fever. Anyone else's horse got this? Any thoughts?

the old lady has really struggled with this weather and her breathing. apart from crap hay creating dust in the yard making her bad for a week last year she has never had breathing issues. there are also a couple of others on the yard struggling this year.

There are lots struggling with the dry weather, I watching mine inhaling dust as they grazed, their front feet kicking the dust up their noses as they moved around trying to graze.

My little one has compromised breathing following the awful virus she had last year and has struggled this year. My vet recommended secreta pro, and I have found it really effective. It has a loading dose and I keep the dose high when the temperatures are really high or humid. It seems to thin any mucus and let the airway drain. I also vac the stable weekly and always feed her from the floor.

My younger cob lives out 24/7 and his paddock looks nearly bare and is quite dusty. He was coughing when worked and the vet diagnosed pasture associated RAO and prescribed a short course of steroids (bloods showed no infection present). We are extremely cautious about the steroids as despite minimal grazing he is on the fat side, and it seems they will only give short-term relief unless the weather changes. When I discussed this with the practice they suggested checking for EMS first to give a more accurate estimation of his risk of laminitis and we are just sorting this out. I suspect he will be fine once we finally get rain and his excess weight will come off once he can be exercised properly.

Mr B's been out on foggage but it's quite seedy and I did wonder if that was bothering him. I've moved him into a different paddock now we've had some rain and the grass is growing a bit after the hay was made. Just in case anyone else in interested in Secreta-pro, I've ordered some but found huge differences in price, cheapest I found was VetUk.

There is a good £20 difference across various suppliers. I have bought from VetUk and Viovet, the latter had a discount code a few weeks ago.

My Tb has had problems this year also. It started early so I blamed the rape, rape made it obviously worse I’ve had him on Secreta Pro for a while not and am pretty convinced it’s doung the job.
I bought a big tub on offer from Viovat £75 and it’s lasting ages.

I work in a feed shop and we have never sold so much cough medicine/breathing type supplements.

My own 'allergic to life' pony literally fell apart with the rape harvest this year, I have never seen him cough and wheeze so much

Quite a few have had a cough over this dry weather, my boy had it for a while. I had my Vet out for another reason and she said there was a Virus going around which might take a while to clear and would need Ventipulmin if it didn’t but it cleared up on its own within two weeks. I was told not to ride him until it had cleared up so as not to place extra strain on his lungs.

My pony was two months ago and turned into asthma, we don't know what started it - but after 1 week I called the vet

One of mine always gets a little cough when it’s really dry and dusty in the fields. A few little spoons of benilyn or covonia does the trick usually

Just curious - what did your vet recommend/prescribe? My little cob seems to have similar, and was prescribed a short course of steroids. I'm thinking these might improve the immediate situation but he will need a longer term treatment too so interested in how others deal with this.

My horse is coughing and as soon as we stop Ventipulmin it starts again. I was considering an inhaler for him, but does anyone know if its the standard blue inhaler for horses or the red? thanks

Yes, neighbouring cob was coughing, had ventipulmin, now has some stuff from the tack shop, I’ll find out what. She’s generally a little snotty anyway. I think it’s the dry conditions.

My mare ended up having a tracheal and bronchial wash as her coughing got so bad and was put on sputolosin and dilaterol. After 3 weeks treatment, we took away the sputolsin and reduced the dilaterol and it seems to be holding. Her's is definitely a dust allergy rather than pollen so now the dry weather has broken and the ground has some dampness she is so much better.

Have you had the vet out?
