My boy had is sacroiliac medicated this week and ive been told to keep him quiet for a week and then start riding him again. I just wondered if there are any exercises i can do with him to help strengthen the area and would it be worth getting a physio to look at him regularly?
What sort of back person would be the best to get, he has had Bowen in the past which has helped him but wasnt sure whats best for this sort of problem

Mine was done in feb and a second lot 5 weeks later (vet said that's normal). I did loads of walking in straight lines, hacking out (harder at this time of year) first in hand then under saddle. Then I added in bits of trot in straight lines, then canter in straight lines. Once I had started to canter out hacking I was just starting to add in some poles and 20m circles. Then he went mental so my fitness plan fell apart! The pony did his part of fitness plan by doing lots of galloping and spinning in the field! On the plus side and despite all that now in Nov vet thinks he still looks great in terms of the sacroiliac. I have had physios and craniosacral therapists but I'm really glad I got a chiropractor (fully qualified), I think she has really helped his locomotion system and that physio can then keep him right.

Thankyou. Ive got loads of time to do what ever needs doing. I have kept my chap in for the last two days because as i was told to keep him quiet i dont want him doing the highland fling when i turn him out! How long was yours in for or was he out straight away?
I will have to try and find an equine chiropractor

Well I didn't read the discharge instructions properly and chucked him out straight away! He was in a smallish paddock with not too much grass though. I felt bad about the idea of sitting on him too soon though (he's quite little) so I hand walked for a week or two even though vets said I could get straight on.

My friends competition driving pony had it done .
He came back to work via lots and lots of long reining ( he's too small for her to ride ) and was fed myoplast and he built up lots he had physio support and still sees the physio but the good news is he out competing and winning competitions .

Mine was done June 2014 having had the injury missed by several vets when examined over the previous 18 months so the condition by then was chronic, I had a fairly full on rehab plan including physio each week, loads of daily exercises, stretches, walking in hand over raised poles plus hacking out each day, I also massaged and strapped him most days as it was his last chance with a poor prognosis if it failed and only the expectations of quiet hacking anyway.
It took months before he had leveled up behind and started to finally look sound on turns, straight lines were fine, we then got the ok to do some small jumps which is the only thing he really enjoys doing and I am keeping everything crossed that he will get to his first competition in almost 3 years on Sunday.

My boy wont go forward with a rider on board. He kicks out in canter transition and humps his back and is aggressive to put a saddle on. He does have ulcers which we initially thought was the problem but he has had near enough every test and scan possible to find out what else is wrong to no avail. He was rescoped on weds by a different specialist and the ulcers are worse, he said that with everything i told him it is all pointing to his sacroiliac being a problem. He did fall over in the field a year ago and the problems started about 6 weeks later. During august he was hacking happily after having 6 weeks off but as soon as i introduced pole work he got aggressive again. The vet said he would medicate his sacroiliac as like he said its about the only thing we have left to try.

I would contact an equine physiotherapist as a chiropractor is trained to treat bones and a physio takes care of muscles, ligaments and all soft tissue which support the skeleton. My physiotherapist, Abigayle Williams, has helped my horse with the same issue through massage, electrotherapy treatments and exercise programme. My horse took a long time to come right, but is back competing now, without any problems.
