Anyones horses still out at night?

i really want to try and leave donk out at night for as long as possible, he gets very upset with routine change and prefers out at night, it also means he is rideable ;)
friend thhinks im crazy - i think, why not while still poss..
anyone else still doing this or am i crazy? he will be clipped on friday, atm he has a light/medium wieght on..
 
Sadly no as ours had to come in last weekend to conserve grass.

Normally they would still be out until the clocks change, so hope we have more rain in Shropshire next summer!
 
Yep, still out until after the fireworks have finished. Only rugged if weather is truly awful. Mind you, I'm down south, so the weather's been fairly kind so far.
 
My two younger ones are out all year round unless it gets absolutely horrendous. My (chestnut...) mare is much more manageable to ride if she's out. When i stable her, she gets very over exciteable! They have a shelter out there too, so by horrendous, i mean really really horrendous!

The old boy comes in at night. Not necessarily because he needs to, but because I'm a big softie, and he is showing his age a bit now!
 
Yep my baby and a few others out in her field still! I did bring her in for a bit as no-one wanted to hay so early but i didnt want her to be hungry but no we are haying she is back out (also because she had some swelling after a kick). I am leaving her out as long as is possible i.e until everyone else caves! If I could i would only bring her in in the worst of weather just incase of injuries! xxx
 
My two stay out as much as possible, they only came in at night for about 3 weeks last winter. They are currently unclipped and unrugged, I will be clipping them in the next couple of weeks.
 
My little herd of 4 are all out :)
Including TB who is MW rugged, cob unrugged, welsh yearling unrugged and native pony (old man) unrugged.
Still got plently of grass, all fat, furry and happy :)

Tha cob will be clipped (neck & belly) and hogged in next few days, if it gets much colder ie below 5 at night i will rug her too but only because she will be clipped :)
 
Hell yes, they stop out for as long as possible depending on the grazing and how wet it's been, providnig their not churning it up and there is enough grass then they stop out for as long as possible (they come in before bonfire night though) usually end of October, they much prefer being out, even if they are clipped you can still rug up and ensure their warm and dry so don't feel bad, feel good for knowing there out in the fresh air :)

Although the TB likes her home comforts, she'd quite happily stay in during the day and night providing she's got food in front of her! :rolleyes: so I think she'll enjoy it coming in on a night.
 
Ours range in age from 3 to 28 and live out 24/7 the old one has a light rug the others wont get one until the weather is bad. My welsh cob is quite happy without one. He was out in all that snow last year without a rug and will only get one if he needs it. We do give them all the hay they will eat and a small feed. They seem quite happy.
 
As of today mine's in. YO decision, based on the state of the waterlogged field. She may be able to go out a little during the day if the rain dries up, otherwise, she's indoors until spring now.
 
Mines out unclipped and unrugged its 3/4 TB aswell :eek: haha :p
She'll be out all winter. If the weather turns really bad she will probably be brought into the paddock with the field shelter in.
If she gets clipped she'll be put out in a rug weight dependent on how clipped she gets!
But its ok she's got plenty of fat on her at the moment to keep nice and warm :o
 
my boy is out 24/7 and only gets a light weight when really awful weather, once winter here will prob go to a med, but he has a winter coat so should fair rather well. i have a stable but never seem to use it :confused:
 
yep welsh d out unrugged, 24/7 on welsh hillside..growing a lovely beard...with his sec b mate..will be dividing up field shortly and haying as and when...if we get a repeat performance of last years snow i do have stabling potential about a 15 min short (but very very steep) walk away...but as he is a youngster still and not the most sensible on the roads (yet) this is an absolutely last resort...did lie awake a bit last night tho listening to the wind howl over the house mind you and wonder/hope he was tucked into a hedge corner with his friend! But, that's just me and lo and behold he was perfectly fine this am! :)
 
Yes Bertie is out until the 17th. I just keep pulling him in every day to clean his legs and dry off for an hour so that I can slap on some mud guard. The mud is back with vengeance :) I would have him out all year if I could but would have to manage is sensitive little pins for the threat of mud fever :D
 
No you're not crazy. Where I used to be RS horses were all out 24/7 year round clipped and well rugged up with hay in field, they were fine. When I was at that yard the time of year they came in did tend to vary more on how much they were churning up the field than anything else. On a couple of occasions they all lived out until after Xmas and then came in on a night til April / May time to ease the pressure on the ground in the winter "trash" field, on others they came in Oct / Nov time depending on how bad the ground was. Definitely keep it up for as long as you can if that's how he's happiest!

I take it HE is a horse and not a "donk":o Mine's still out, rugless and loving it!:)
 
Ours live out 24/7 year round with no problems. Most of them are rugged and there is lots of natural shelter in their field. They also have free access to their stables but very rarely use them.
 
Yes still out 24/7 and naked :eek: looking at clipping very soon as she's getting very hairy and sweats when ridden. I normally leave out till at least mid November. We have plenty of grass so not been supplying hay yet and only fed once at night.
 
Mine's still out at night but apart from the shetlands she is the only one in her field who is. She is so much happier out that I am leaving it as long as am allowed which will probably be until the clocks change. Still last year she was in at night from the 4th September due to moving to a new yard and wanting her settled so if I can string it out to the 4th November we'll already be 2 months better off :-)
