re Benzyl, I apply once a week neat, rub in well, and the rest of the time i keep some diluted as a wash which i rinse though the affected areas. It seems to work fine, i just can't stand the smell of it!
Chex has it mildly, and he lives out. I tried keeping him in when the midges were at their worst, but found him getting just as eaten in the stable
. I just put a fly rug on and keep him covered in plenty fly spray (with deet). I used Killitch too which seemed to help. Another horse at the yard has it worse and he literally lives in his Boett, keeps it on to be ridden etc.
moose has a mild case and lives out 24/7 in summer. Come march i will start feeding her 'think fly' which was recommended to me last year and she got through the summer months with mane & tail in tact and just a bog standard fly rug plus the think fly supplement
second avon skin so soft spray.
only dont put too much on if its really hot, as it can burn! a quick squirt is enough.
and i like the snuggy hoods too! fab on my mare, dont rub and really god the night before a show too.

My 10 yo Arab gelding suffers from mild SI and lives out 24/7 all year round, from March to October in a Rambo Hoody. When he came to me as a 4yo he had a Boett which lasted all of three months. We both hated it - it made him sweat, it didn't cover his belly properly and it tore if you looked at it. The Hoody has been terrific, and I plaster the exposed bits with Skin so Soft, the diluted bath oil, not the spray.
He rarely tries to rub his tail now, only the very top of his mane and his face. And we live in a very midge-y area.
Thank you so much for this. I started finding it difficult to find benzyl for George so started using killitch which has benzyl in it. Not as good as straight benzyl though. Do you spray it on all over or apply it in specific areas?

Not sure of any of the other pharmacy chains, but any lloyds pharmacy and certain independants can specially order in a 500ml bottle of benzyl benzoate in for you. You have to ask specially and it has to go through the pharmacy order, but their wholesaler certainly does supply it, not sure of the retail price however it certainly works out cheaper than most animal suppliers and is full strangth.
Haven't read all the replies so forgive if any of this repeats! I have a horse which had the symptoms of SI so had he blood tested.
Turned out he was allergic to molasses.
He didn't just rub but also had a foul temper and was dangerous at feed times.
I cut out the molasses - now feed him RIDE AND RELAX with GRAZE ON - attitude changed overnight and so did his so called SI.
He was still sensitive and last Autumn he had a steroid injection to try and break the last remaining bits of his copy-cat SI symptoms. He had been doing it for so long it was habit.
Vet advised chances of Laminitus but he said small ponies are higher risk and the bigger the horse gets the less the risk.
Speak to the Vet, ask for a blood/allergy test and act on those results. It only cost me £150 to find it out.
I certainly now have a much happier horse who gets to go out!
