Hi folks,

Am I right in believing that if you have a horse box over 3.5tonnes, you have to have roughly 6 weekly inspections to prove they are road worthy? If so how much does this usually set you back?

Thanks :).

I think that might be for HGV only. So not for the boxes up to HGV

Happy to be corrected though

Up to 7.5 tonnes you need annual plating after that I'm not sure. It always cos me about 1700 quid to get mine plated but it was a rust bucket ...

Certainly the 7.5t lorries don't need 6 weekly tests as above. I don't know where/if the tests kick in but it will be over 7.5t.

Looking at google the term HGV can be seen to apply to a vehicle over 3.5t so I'm sorry if I confused you. In my mind a HGV is a huge vehicle needing a special HGV licence to drive

Regular checks are needed by any vehicle that is used by somebody with an operators licence ie commercial use and is a condition of retaining the operators licence.

This is it , a 3.5 ton needs these checks if it's being used commercially .

HGV went in 1991

LGV is now the correct term

Using the old HGV terminology can get confusing if used nowadays

LGV C1 = 3.5 to 7.5 GVW
LGV C = 7.5 to no upper licence limit but C&U regs limit to 32 tonnes generally

As said - 6 weekly inspections for commercial vehicles
No tacho inspections for private but seal must be in place
