anything you can do to help a haematoma go down?

my horse has a small haematoma on the side of his thigh, I think he caught himself coming out of the stable.
It's about 2 inches across and doesn't bother him. The vet saw it and said it would go down in time but I wondered if there was anything I could do to help it disperse.
 
I wouldn't lance it - at the moment it's a sealed wound, if you lance it you get the chance of introducing bacteria and therefore infection. Massage & maybe some arnica.
 
my boy had a huge one on his shoulder from a kick....he was lame with it and I used danilon, cold hosing and massage....took ages to go down completely

if its not bothering him and vet said not to worry I'd just gently massage it once or twice a day
 
As HD - don't lance it as you'll create a pathway for infection and you could turn something simple into a long and expensive pain in the backside, ie vets and antibx and box rest away from flies etc etc etc. It'll go down on its own - just gentle massage if you really feel you must do something.
 
deffo massage and don't be too gentle either. i was advised to use as hotter water as you can stand NOT BOILING on a large pad of cotton wool and hold over the lump repeat daily then start massage the dead blood under the skin will break up and disperse.
it broke up and then disappeared and it was a huge one on my horse's hind quarters after a kick.
 
Gave it a bit of massage last night and certainly not bothering him. If he doesn't like something I'm doing he subtly moves round to position a different bit next to me.

My horse had a large haematoma/seroma and the only way to get it to go was to get a vet to drain it out and put a drainage hole in it, it was left open for a couple of days to had obviously we had to keep it clean and he was given antibiotics. You can't even see where he had it now.
 
When my boy had one the vet came out lanced it and drained it a course of anti bs and it was fine in a couple of days the reason being i had this done because they can cause bacterica being left then cause blood poisioning well thats what my vet said!
 
Best thing for a haematoma - first of all how recent is it? The best thing for it is some PEME therapy which can be carried out by a qualified ACPAT Physiotherapist - you can find your nearest one on www.acpat.org. If it acute or sub acute PEME (based on electro magnetic fields - but it is vital that the correct dosage is used) is the best, if it is chronic then a combination of massage and ultrasound is the best option.
 
He's usually out all day except today as he's pulled both back shoes off and we're waiting for a farrier to remove a nail left behind. Not pressing into anything and attached tight with the clenches down but don't want him running around and it moving.
He can have gentle walk and more massage tonight.
 
Mine had huge one when he reared and went over backwards.Gave him plenty of turnout danilon for inflammation and would have used arnica now if it happened.It went and never had problem.
