Went to view another horse today, what shocked me most was the amount of noise coming from his stomache / gut area whilst in extended trot & canter. Feel really silly asking this question but I have never heard anything like this before.
Prepared to be slated..........

It sounded really loud a bit like someone squeezing a wind bellow instrument. Please expand how does a dirty sheath contribute to this noise??? (Learn something everyday & I have owned mares & geldings for years!!!!)

I've always believed it was wind in the sheath rather than dirt?

It is trapped air - the Dirty sheath is an old wives tale

its trapped air....some people reckon it happens when horse is very relaxed...my old gelding however used to do it when he was in a bad/stressy mood and trying to resist rider.....

I think it happens more when the horse is tense - hence why it was happening in the extended paces because he was probably being excited into producing more.

As daisycrazy said it happens generally when the horse is tense and it is just the noise of air in the sheath. I guess much like the 'fart' noises some people can make with their armpits!

I've only ever known one horse that made that "oink" noise, I always thought it was his saddle squeaking, till someone told me otherwise...
