I am writing this post as its seems to be the only way for my apology to reach the numerous people effected by my loose stallion at this weekends Somerford park event.
I am so disappointed in myself and my horse, I let myself, the other competitors and the event down.
The horse, although he looked like an unmanageable wild beast, had actually been competing successfully all last season and this one in BYEH classes without putting a foot wrong. What happened on Saturday to change this behaviour I cannot imagine but change it did, and many people were upset and shocked by my stallion chasing a mare around the dressage arenas!, unsettling all horses and stopping tests. A judges car was damaged and spectators were visibly shaken.
I would like to thank all the people who helped and to the event staff who although asked me to leave the event ground,(rightly so) did so with grace and a warm smile.
I cried all the way home and am yet to stop, embarrassed and upset that I had caused so much chaos at an event, in the sport I love and have supported for many years. I am not a novice but am still very much an amateur. I hold myself fully responsible for the behaviour of my horse however out of character, and would like to wh ole heartedly apologise to all.

Your stallion is not the first or last stallion to do this. In all my time grooming i have come across this twice ( one was William Fox pitts ) and its not nice. Just be greatfull that nobody was hurt. Can i ask how did he get loose?? accidents happen please dont beat yourself up about it its over now.

I hadn't heard anything about this incident. But I think you are very brave coming on here and making an open and public apology. Obviously, it was a horrible thing to have happened - but no one was hurt and I am sure you will do your best to make sure it doesn't happen again. Horses are unpredictable creatures - just look at the normally placid shire that caused havoc when it bolted out of the ring at one of the county shows.
Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you have had an awful day. Animals are unpredictable and even the most well behaved animals suddenly do something out of character without obvious reason.

You took the best action you could in the circumstances which most people will understand.

Hugs and I hope your day improves.

I wasn't there but also think what a good way to apologise in this way. I hope you will stay and join in the forum (or are you already a member but opened a new account just for this? Doesn't matter if you did well done and well come. As someone else said you aren't the first and won't be the last. Lets hope it's the last of your embarrassing moments

Hey - s--t happens (especially with animals!) and you've been big enough to apologise publicly. Well done - don't beat yourself up about it will you?!!! Hope all goes well for you at future events

Wasn't there but look - these things happen, and nobody was hurt. Animals have a funny way of showing us up when we least expect and need it!

I think you are very brave and also very polite to have posted this but please don't beat yourself up about it endlessly.

I wasn't there, but sounds like you had a very tough day. Your apology comes across as very genuine and i'm sure people understand that any horse can be unpredicable. Don't give yourself a hard time

Things happen and animals are unpredictable. You must have been terrified about what might happen when he took off, but fortunately no people and no horses were hurt - cars can be mended and it must have been absolutely mortifying that your horse caused such chaos. Don't give yourself a hard time, he's not the first horse to do it and he certainly won't be the last. Well done for making a public apology on an open forum. I hope it doesn't put you off competing in the sport you love.

big sympathy to you, i really hope that no-one got hurt and that no horse got hurt either. you're very brave to post this on here, maybe the same to H&H letters page would reach an even wider audience, if you haven't thought of it already.
any horse can be utterly unpredictable, we all know that, and if they are we haven't got a hope in hell of stopping one if it really chooses to ignore us... we usually manage to maintain the nice illusion of control 99.9% of the time.
fwiw i had a gelding bolt with me last year in the dressage at Solihull, he did his very best to run up the back end of a mare, i couldn't do anything to stop him and we were very lucky that no injuries occurred, i was mortified but i absolutely could not stop him.
i hope you can try to work out why it happened, so you have a plan just in case he does it again. or, if you don't intend to keep him as a breeding stallion... i hesitate to mention it, but it is a thought i guess.

very best of luck with him.

as above really horses are predictable, my old 18hh decided he didnt want to go home at after a show once, and galloped all around suffolk showground, then up a large mound of dirt so everyone in the showground could see he was loose, and then continued to refuse to be caught, with me running up and down this mound after him.... nice touch!!

at least no one was hurt, i wasnt there either. nice apologyt though. Think the letter idea is a good one.

What an awful thing to have happened to you. I truly hope that most people who saw it were educated horse people and understood that sh1t happens sometimes when dealing with animals, of all types!

Well done for apologising - what a thoughtful person you are. And chin up - I know it's hard because you will probably be constantly replaying it in your head but it will fade in time, don't cry too many tears over it xx

Wow, this is the first time Ive really used these forums, and Ive got to say thankyou so much to all of you who commented on my apology post, you have all raised me from my bed of self pity and embaressment, I will take it on the chin and try and move on positively having learnt some valuable lessons. thankyou you all once again x

I wasn't there, but it is very decent of you to apologise - horses are large, stupid, unpredictable creatures and these things happen.
If it makes you feel better, my friend's gelding (so no hormone excuse) got away from her at a dressage comp, pranced through every one of the tests going on in the grass arenas, and ran around high blowing til he was captured.
Unlike you, my friend was so embarassed that when they asked for his owner over the tannoy, she pretended he wasn't his, and paid someone else to collect him for her!

I agree with others it is a very noble thing for you to apologise. I understand how embarassing this is for you but im sure you didnt do it on purpose! Your apology will go some way to making amends for those who were affected and im sure it will be appreciated by them too.

Maybe post this in competition riders too?

I was very moved by your post OP and can only imagine how awful it must have been.
Well done for the apology and I hope all the positive stuff has made you feel a bit better!
Agree with everyone, animals are so unpredictable, I hope someone videoed it so we can watch it on you've been framed!
Shilasdair, I was feeling quite tearful for OP till I read your post and spat my cuppa over the keyboard!!!
Love it!

Last time I fell (after which, I was told the mare out side was in season! Grr!) thankfully the fence around the arena was high enough to deter H from showing himself up completly!

Honestly, you aren't the first, and you won't be the last person to end up with a loose stallion; and most people wouldn't have the guts to apologise!

Oh, poor you. This incident was unexpected and I am sure it could have happened to anyone and has indeed happened to someone in the past.

You are clearly mortified by what happened and your apology is sincere and from the heart xxx

Try not to dwell too much on it. We all can take precautions and try to prepare ourselves for eventualities but sometimes our beloved horses show they do have a mind of their own and decide to go off and do their own thing.

You poor thing, you must have been mortified and it sounds like you have beaten yourself up more than enough already - accidents happen especially with unpredictable animals.

Chin up and have a glass of wine, and good for you apologising openly like this.

I wasn't there, and also think this is very decent of you to appologise.

My overactive imagination is going ten fold and I have images of your recaptured boy going "sorry mum, but she smelt soooo good, I forgot where I was".

However, I bet he wasn't a bit repentive.

aren't horses embarrassing!

i think its very brave of you to apologise...and am sure most people will realise that they are bigger and stronger than us and that it was a genuine accident!
