Appaloosas - character traits

I refer to mine as the teenage daughter I never wanted. I swear she would slam her stable door behind her in a strop if she could.

And we have 'discussions' about rugs. She makes it very, very clear when she feels one is unnecessary. We then have to discuss the weather forecast that I have seen and she hasn't. Yes, it is going to be cold and wet later and yes, you are going to wear the red one.

Ah rugs, both of the previous girls could take their rugs off in the field, without damaging them, much like a snake shedding their skin :D

I’ve only known a small handful personally and none of them have endeared me to want one. I’d say generally quite stubborn and opinionated.

That said there was a regular poster on here, Vicky? With one called Dotty and she looked super cool.

Hello! Long time no foruming for me, but a friend said I had been mentioned!!

Yes I have a spotty and yes she is absolutely awesome, but she is a knabstrupper <3

Thanks for remembering her though!!

Mine is:
Loving
Treat orientated
Intelligent - picks things up too quickly, then offers all his tricks for said treats
Sensitive - I call him one of life's worriers. If he gets worked up about something you have to leave him to sort himself out.
Can be spooky, but so brave about things I think he'll spook at

He does, however, offer to check most things out that worry him.

He's not a rug wrecker at all *touches wood*

VJ!!
How is dotty? And the rest of your lovely lot? I've missed your C&T posts :(

Mental note I like knapstrupper rather than appaloosa. All spotties are not equal!

You appear to have my horse.... :P

An update. After reading this thread I decided to start training him and give his brain something to do. The more I did, the quieter and more engaged he is. He seems to love it. We do some stuff in hand and now I can lie over, wriggle and pat, and put my knee up onto his back, with no issues at all and without him even being tied up. I plan to sit on him on the next few days, but he's too weak to work and he's healing a sarcoid and can't take a girth yet anyway. There's no rush, but clearly I need to keep doing stuff with him for his peace of mind. If this is typical appy, I quite like it!

I'm waiting on tenterhooks for the PSSM result I sent for last week, too.

Super chilled, pretty much bombproof, incredibly lazy at times and a complete nuisance in the best way - always wants attention, ridiculously curious, destructive of anything he can get a hold of, very intelligent. His sire, Wa ha Dar is known for his excellent temperament and consistently passing this on. Wouldn't change him for the world.

You may have found the key to your horse! It occurred to me too that your horse's breeding is largely of 'working' type and like working dogs these beasts need things to think about. My Appy x arab is utterly delightful and does many different things but he is only delightful if he has plenty to do: not necessarily every day but things to think about and new challenges on a regular basis. You may find you have a superbly versatile and engaged horse just now! :)

local RS breeds them for use in the RS. I've ridden a few there and several going back through the years. I've liked them to ride, the ones at the RS are comfy, ground covering, not too wide, safe-they are all barefoot and have good feet. They are quite looky but not spooky and one has no spacial awareness and doesn't know where his feet are at out hacking. I did consider buying one from the RS for myself last year but decided I couldn't be doing with anything that big (16h). I've never found them to be any more or less quirky than anything else-but then I am used to Exmoors.

Keeping fingers crossed for a good answer on the PSSM. If you're looking for something to occupy his mind then mine loves polework. She will free school herself over them and is very chuffed when she negotiates random distances without touching anything.

Yay, negative for type 1. I hope he's an unlikely candidate for type 2.

I'll dig out the poles now the weather has finally turned.

Yay!

Mine loves learning pole work in hand and lateral work. He also goes for in hand hacks and seeing the world and practicing his lateral work.

My sisters three year old appy is just starting the above as he is getting bored. Just ten minute sessions and he is mentally happy

Good news on the PSSM.

Mine is doing in-hand walks as she's off ridden work right now. She's nosey. So busy staring at the lambs she nearly fell over her feet.

Enjoy working with yours.

I have owned my Appaloosa x hackney for eight years now age 5 he was a pain, very spooky but the important bit was he must have found me an asset to his survival as never tried to get me off. Now age 13 a different horse I hack him in all weathers jump on after a week in the stable without a lunge no problems, we have firsts in Dressage and barrel racing he does well a Le Trec has hunted with me but does not really like to show jump but is getting better. Beach rides sponsored rides on our own or with company. https://www.facebook.com/paul.cawso...7/UzpfSTUyNzg4ODIzNjoxMDE1MzYyMjE1Njc5ODIzNw/
