Going to look at a potential new horse this week, its an appaloosa. Just wondered if there are any appaloosa owners (or anyone with such experience) out there that can give me an idea of their temperament, good points, bad points etc.

Closest ive had was an appy x hackney and an appy x lippizzaner (yea i know...

The x hackney was really quite taken to the appy side and she was a nice enough little horse but i never really clicked with her. She was a chilled little lady although could get a bit grumpy. What do you want to do with the potential horsey? That tends to dictate quite a bit

There was one ay my old yard - she was gorgeous and had lovely temperament. The worst thing about her was her mane and tail were very, very thin - she really was virtually a perfect horse

Its not got any spots sorry! Its a marble colour!!! Its for general hacking, lower level dressage and maybe a bit of jumping. Riding club sort of stuff.
 
My friend breeds appaloosa's - they have great temperaments and are very versatile. Her daughters got to Riding Club Championships in S.J., Horse Trials and Hunter Trials with theirs. They also showed them and took them hunting. Go for it!
 
I am fond of spotty horses! They "can" have huge ugly heads and wispy manes and tails - they can also be total superstars!! Hope you find a good one.

They dont *tend* to excel in things (generalisation i know but its also generally true) but they do make nice all rounders. Ive known a few that have loved the endurance riding kinda stuff though.

It's great, no pulling or plaiting, and drys after washing with a quick flick!! Perfect!!!

I have had her 18 years, she is a fab horse. We have done ridden classes, show jumping, hunter trials, been hunting, worked on trecking yard and rounded up cattle!! Now retired at 26 years old. She has always been a very sharp ride and once she gets herself wound up takes a lot of calming down, but all of the other appys we have met have been much calmer.

Beware, they are addictive!!!

Rosie's appaloosa (BB) is a bit of a superstar. She won loads of money SJ, went to PC Champs a couple of times and won her section this year. Also did JRN and went to Weston Park for the last 2 years. He had his moments but was generally a nice horse to have around. She sold him a couple of months ago for a lot of money - so go for it.

My MIL breeds appaloosas - they are fabulous horses! Great temperaments, athletic, brave, and they always stand out in a crowd - even if they don't have much of a mane/tail!!
 
Is it purebred - what is the breeding?
We have had appaloosas before and shown them at national level in spotty classes, also done riding club teams with them etc. Highly recommend a decent appaloosa. If they are not so good, then the problem is that you tend to stand out a bit.
 
Hi, I've only had mine 3 months, so we are still getting to know each other. I don't know if she is typical of the breed, but so far she is being a little star . She is very athletic, has fast acceleration, with a good jump & can turn on a sixpence. She is very willing to please, but on her terms as she has an opinion on most things! She is certainly one of those horses where you reach a compromise. She can be grumpy, but also very loving (if that makes sense). She is great fun.

She also has the typical wispy mane & tail, which feels like silk, great as it doesn't get full of knots, also I try not to brush it too much for fear of losing it all.
 
Its a registered one, out of a sire called ...Blue, I can't remember the first bit of the name she said! As i mentioned before its a marble / roany colour not a spotty one!
 
i have one too! he's a rescue, so he may not be pure-bred Appaloosa, but he is spotty

he has a huge character, is very fun! he hasn't got much mane and tail, which is a shame, but his coat is so thin that he doesn't need clipping! :P

i have one well x with a cob? (we have been told but she was saved from the meat man so not completely sure)

i wouldn't be without her! best horse i have ever had would love another but they seem to be going for quite alot of money now a days

we don't compete so she does her job well (taking us to the pubs) however i am hoping to do endurance on her this year as she has amazing stamina(sp) she is the kindest animal and is handled by anyone for 2yo's to 80+ yo's plus she has so much character and makes me laugh.

cause shes not a pure bred she has got alot of mane and tail and gets extreamly fluffy in the winter

I have 3 Appaloosas on my farm; 1 of them I owned, 1 I still own and the other is a boarding horse. All 3 still remain on my farm and have been here for a couple of years now.

They are all really lovely horses. Very nice kind personalities and will try their hardest for you. The 2 I have had are very flexible horses - fabulous all-rounders but I would agree that they never seem to really excel at any particular thing but they generally wont make you look foolish either because they are good enough at everything.

Appy's generally have a very good nature and are laid back horses; often suitable for any rider to get on and have a nice time safely.

2 of these Appy's have beautifully thick manes and tails, one is a little wispy but not silly-looking. The 3 here all have wonderful feet but this is something that you definitely want to pay attention to as often Appy's have awful feet if they are not taken good care of.

i just sold my lightweighty appy, at the end of the season... very strong feet.. thin mane and tail to begin with but just mane and tailed most days and it ended up VERY thick.. lots of stamina and very honest jumper x x he was such a laugh put up with anything and going anywhere- but was fast and a fun ride too xx
 
They are the best - at least the one I owned was. He was point and press to jump, one nudge with leg and he was off - but safe. I miss him so much. And never realised how brilliant he was until he was gone. Same old story.
 
I have two with appy markings now
I am shocked to be honest as I used to destest them, think they were awful and ugly and never thought I would own them. I think it is the image of short tails and goofy eyes

Now the two I have are beautiful and wonderful and I adore them.
