appaloosa's

I've got an Appaloosa x Anglo Arab by amazing blue. He's a nutter!
He's very beautiful and moves amazingly but he's always on edge and you can't relax out on a ride he spooks all the time. I brought him as a foal 10 years ago so didn't know what his temperament would be like.
They wont all be the same so I'd just make sure you test the horse out very well.

Just to prove my point a few posts ago, I rode Saffy tonight in the dark, on our new yard, first time in the school, and it was blowing a gale. She didn't put a foot wrong :) Soo sensible!

Ah, I had an Amazing Blue Appy, a lot of his foals are like that. Of course, he died the year before last but he did sire a lot of Appys in this country.

Lol I literally nearly spat my tea all over the keyboard when I read that last bit.Sensible and laid back are not terms commonly used for appy's when ridden IME.....

Interestingly mine is calm and well behaved when in busy traffic,or other situations he knows it matters to be reliable, but on a quiet lane or in the school, field etc,all bets are off and he's a fruit loop lol.

I love my lad dearly, but he's not remotely sensible or calm, and from what i have read on here and elsewhere it seems appy's rarely are.
On the age thing,my lad turned 6 this year, and has just started to mature and settle into his work.At 4 yrs he was unpredictable and inclined to be bonkers, but I guess they are all different and some might grow up earlier than others.

Over sensitive, over responsive, over intelligent, spooky, quirky and just generally drama queens would be my summary of them TBH.Can be reliable on the ground, but usually hilarious to ride:D

Sorry that was an essay, and not overly positive. They are amazing little horses, and very rewarding to train and work with, just not known for their sensible and calm natures when ridden as a rule;).

If you search on here there have been a few threads asking about appy's,mostly with the same responses I have to say,but some very accurate POV and lovely stories and well worth a read is seriously considering owning one.

I have a part bred and this describes him down to a T. He was late cut and can be a pig sometimes, but the above is all true of mine. 20% Perfect gentleman, 80% complete drama queen. He pulls the weirdest faces as well, the kind which should by rights be physically impossible but are at the same time hysterical.

This might sound really strange but I was googling my new horse & you obviously use to own him as it's his exact breeding!!!!!

Last July we bought a just backed four year old part bred Appy, to go with the then 16 year old pure bred, who was got eight years ago, to do the job of the then retired thirty one year old unregistered Appy. The size of the ego's is the same (huge), the level of intelligence is the same (huge) and the amount of drama queenery is the same (huge) :D So is the level of affection, loyalty and fun. They do take a while to settle and keep you on your toes and I don't think I would want to see a novice dealing with them.

I have an appy shes 3 and had her since 6 months old, obviously she has had her days but I have found her to be very calm and sensible :)

Oh yes, I had an Amazing Blue sired nutter too. Could be fantastically loyal and clever when he wasn't trying to kill you. My friend still has a mare by him and treats her with the respect a nutter deserves.

haha, identical traits to a little cross appy mare I have. I have never come across such a clever horse, very opinionated, amazing jump but totally depends what mood she's in as to whether she wants to do it. interestingly also very good to hack.
she lets you know exactly what she thinks in any situation and will argue back if she disagrees! she is hilarious! i can't help but liking her, she is so unpredictable but so much fun!

I have an Appy X (not sure exactly what with as breeding not recorded but we think something native). He's a lovely boy, total sweetheart on the ground. Ridden he is clever and a bit opinionated and will try to be the boss if you let him :) he has quite nice paces and makes a lovely shape over a jump and really loves to jump. He's great fun xc too especially now that we've sorted out the napping :) He does have a buck (only if we have a 'disagreement' or isn't listening to leg and he gets a light tap) in him but much better than he was now that I try and ride more dominantly (but in a nice way I'm still gentle just firmer) and be the leader. Love him to bits and he has done wonders for my confidence and riding. He's a cutie and definitely my forever horse. He is actually my 1st horse after years of wishing for one of my own and is just so right for me and couldn't have asked for a better first horse. I like his little quirks and he has character and can be cheeky but still looks after you.

He is my happy appy and everyone at yard is fond of him :)
