Ugh some horsey people seriously seriously p*ss me off.
I went to a local showjumping competition today as a favour to my friend, and rode her horse in the 1.05m class as she is pregnant and can't ride.
The horse is ridden in a snaffle with a kineton noseband. Of course they arn't a very common piece of tack and I got loads of people asking me what it was and how it works, which is fair enough, I do the same!
One woman came upto me and said "Crikey, I havnt seen one of those bloody things since the early seventies, and even then they never took off, how very oldschool! I think its time to update your tackroom sweetie, you're a little old fashioned arn't you!?"
I mean, my god, if the noseband works for the horse, who the hell cares if it "unfashionable". Its really wound me up, if she had said this to someone a little more horse fashion concious, or a younger rider you can put your money on them never wearing it again. I felt so angry, tack doesn't go out of fashion, I'd sooner be riding it in an odd noseband and a snaffle than having the latest, coolest thing on.

people like that annoy me! I used to ride my 14h2 in a drop noseband at the time when no one wore them (so unfashionable darlin

) and the amount of comments I got asking why I didn't just use a flash was unbelievable especially as they normally came from riders of horses wearing incorrectly fitted flashes in the first place!!!!!

Surely you should have had him in a dutch gag?

I think there probably are better things than the kineton available today- not sure what though!!! Im not really sure how the kineton works.

I would also be old school as my horse goes in a jointed lozenge snaffle or french link and a cavesson noseband! If i need to bit up I would go for a pelham/coppper roller depending on the problem and i would use double reins!!

I would even consider a double bridle! How bad is that!

Very old fashioned!

I might even put a martingale on!

And I have westropp overreach boots

Well this is entirely your fault!!!

How dare you not add some diamante to it before taking it show jumping??? If you'd blinged it up it would have been perfectly acceptable!!!

Seriously though, what a stupid woman!

[quite] I havnt seen one of those bloody things since the early seventies, and even then they never took off

Well they have been about since well before the 70's ( and so have I!) but this is when one longs for a quick Dorothy Parker style reposte-

and why should your horse be a fashion victim if the bit and nosedband you use suit him

I have just google imaged it - what is the difference between it and a snaffle ? Sorry, I have never heard of one..how embarassing.

Talking about horsey fashion....went to a weenie show today, like 3 people in my class, and a girl from my yard had the FULL bling, with the little ear covery things...and the fluff. Bloody beat the pony as well. But at least it looked like it had been hit by 'horsey fashionitis'....huh...what is wrong with 7year old tendon boots held together with superglue?!

Rosilie, your coloured is lovely, ignore all grumps.

It wasn't my coloured actually, chance would be a fine thing at holding mine in a snaffle.
The kineton noseband is an efficient way to stop the bit from hurting the mouth if the horse trips or jerks his head or seeks too heavy support or whatever. Because it moves the pressure away from the bars and onto the nose. It has a restraining function on the nose of the horse, like a hackamore without leverage. The regular, especially the drop noseband, has the same effect on the head of the horse, only, it applies its pressure via the lower jaw (which is pulled back and pulls the cavesson back which pulls on the nose). Only, the metal bit puts pressure on the bars, which can hurt.Used in a correct way, it can help hot, rushing, sensitive horses from fearing the bit, and it can also help horses who open their mouths against a conventional noseband, because they feel them around their heads

I have to say - that sounds like what my ponio does - I have put her ina grackle which helps and isn't 'old school'!!!!? Do you know where I can get one to try? She actually goes better in a headcollar..depressing.

Anyway, sleepy.... goodnight, sorry to have highjacked your post...x

Yes mine is in a grackle because he crosses his jaw. You should be able to order them in at your saddlery, mine is actually oldschool and was my mothers

Thankyou! They are great nose bands, and I think if a lot more people tried changing the noseband before chnaging the bit there wouldn't be so many dutch gags etc around.

apparently I am too - i hunt in a proper double bridle (not a pelham with 2 reins), wear hair net except when hacking out. use as little tack as possilbe and all my bridles are plain (flat) hunter bridles with self coloured stitching and billets not buckles.... and to top it all off i only have black or white numnahs!

but on the otherside of the coin i do jump with a myler combination....

More fool her then, it's what works for the horse at the end of day.

The words fashion and tack don't belong in the same sentence, perhaps she should update her vocabulary a bit.

However she may just of been a little 'unaware/ignorant' thinking you didn't know what you were doing etc...who knows.

all we do know is you have to be thick skinned in this horse game sometimes and just laugh it off later.

I'm very old school, and will quiet openly admit that i have no idea how most 'modern' bits work, i've yet to meet a horse that doesn't go well in a variation of a snaffle or a pelham/kimblewick (but thats just my opinion) I've used a Kineton alot in the past, and even while team chasing have been asked what it was. I ride Anky in a Kimblewick, and i've had plenty of comments about that, & they are super bits.

I was very pleased to be told on saturday (while at a SJ comp) that I looked alot more working hunter than SJ (thank god)

one of the bits i dislike most is the 'bubble bit', you hardly ever see a horse that isn't jumping hollow when ridden in one of those, & its amazing how many i've collected from horses that have arrived ridden in one, then swapped to something alot better for them

Old school will always be mocked by those who don't really know what they are talking about, there are plenty of wonderful modern ideas, but just becasue something is old doesn't mean its out dated, crikey, we all still use saddles, & they've been around for YEARS!!

people like her really annoy me- i used to hunt my pony in a double bridle, and people always used to say 'dont you get muddled up?' or something to that effect.

kinetons are under-rated, i manage to go XC in a kineton and a snaffle on Sol. I dont think i'd be without mine!
