I’m do like watching show jumping and I’ve been to a fair few shows and happy to watch it on the tele. Dressage is my thing to do personally though. So, my question…… what on earth is that half-rising-trotty thing they do in the canter?? The horse is in collected canter and the riders sit one beat and rise one beat like it’s a trot. I don’t remember this in the past. Is it new ?

I sometimes do it because my jump saddle isn’t the comfiest to sit to so it gets me out of the saddle more.

I think people do it when they don't want to sit the canter and possibly flatten it, and don't want the horse to think it's going to start the jumping round. I've always called it rising canter, it's been around since the year dot.

Riding canter - I do it quite often on lazy horses and use the sit part as a squeeze on. You can "push" with your seat more with short stirrups

Think it’s called ‘posting’ or was in my day! jockeys do it sometimes. I don’t like it. Seems to me it’d be v easy to get out of rhythm with the horse.

Very usual in polo. It spares the horse's back. But quite difficult for a novice to ride. I know as I used to try and fail on my old favourite Maisie. On my current horse I use a lightish seat in canter. She is ridden by many sharers and wouldnt hold with any fancy stuff. Also I am 20 years older and so more cautious.
But OH and I do still love watching polo.

As an aside, I have always thought that "posting" was rising to the trot. But I'm an antique (77>78) so it's probably all different now.

Lionel Dunning is a blast from the past for me. when show jumping was on the tv I was glued to it and used to like his horses

As said, it’s been around for years, we use it to steady the canter if the horse is a bit too forward.
