Appleby horse death

Where were the grand national activists when you want them? This sort of abuse is going on all of the time and no one seems to care, but they are happy to ban hunting, horse racing etc, citing animal cruelty but the travellers just carry on regardless … makes me 😡
Because the activists know damn well that they'll get hammered by the Appleby lot and there would be no TV coverage of their hammering. They're cowards aka plastic activists.

I don’t blame them for not wanting to get hammered.

I think if the “community leaders” can’t identify who has done this they’re pathetic, and need to register everyone that goes there and have numbers on carts etc so that they CAN be identified. If they can’t do that then their stupid tradition of “horsemanship” (sorry, just pausing while my eyes roll back into my head) should end.

I remember going as a young girl (about 7-8 years old) when I used to ride small ponies for a local horse dealer.
I remember it being a true 'horse fair' with people showing horses off with the intention of selling them.i remember gleaming coloured cobs in super condition.
If there was any abuse I definitely would have remembered seeing it as I was a true little pony lover.

I still recall being horrified by seeing men 'sealing a deal' by spitting on their palms and shaking hands so I definitely would not have forgotten seeing horses being abused as it would have really upset me.
I'm not saying it didn't happen, I'm sure it did, as in all spheres of horse ownership, but it mustn't have been prolific in public view.

The last time I went was over 30 years ago and even then the dynamic had changed. I saw things then that did horrify me.
It doesn't seem to be a horse fair any more but a place where a lot of people go to hammer horses up and down to the point of exhaustion for no real purpose.

As for those saying it's a close community and everyone will know who the man in question is then
think again.
In my locality (and we are about 100 miles from Appleby) there are so many people who travel there and take horses and carts. They are not Gypsies by any stretch of the imagination.

On the other side of the discussion - my long-time ACWF farrier (and his current student apprentice) are both settled travellers and are calm, gentle and patient with our horses, who can be awkward to handle on occasions because of old age and degrees of infirmity and attitude. They both have trotting horses and I've seen them out on drives. Nothing that would concern me about the care and management of their horses and ponies. The daughter of the ACWF has a beautiful big cob that she shows and jumps very successfully.

I have a very low opinion of travellers, having lived in two different parts of the country with large traveller communities where in both locations, neglect was in plain sight. Horses left tethered to the side of the road, in 30C+ heat with no food, shade or water was a very common site. A couple of times I had to call the RSPCA over collapsed horses, yet decades later nothing has changed. Local charities have saved horses on the brink of death who were dumped by these communities with no care whatsoever as to whether or not they lived or died.

I am generally a liberal minded person in support of minorities living their lives as these choose, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. I also don't want to tar everyone with the same brush, but my first hand experience of the traveller community has only been bad thus so far. The photos of Appleby of horses being ragged around don't do them any favours.

Poor poor youngster :(
There’s a ‘settled’ community down the A road from us. It’s on the way to my OH’s work. I could tell you tales that would (probably not given you’re all able to imagine) make your hair stand on end about what some of them have done and the dealings he’s had-2 of the team versus hundreds, the threats, the outright lies, the blatant theft. 🤬

They call us gorgers. Is that a racial slur too? Travellers aren’t a different race as far as I’m aware. It might be a derogatory term for travellers but it’s not racist.

ETA- I’ve removed my comment to save you being offended.
I call them the ethnic minority of the mobile kind. Is that racist too?

I wasn’t actually referring to travellers or gypsies in my original comment, but the ones that ‘wannabe’. They pretend they have that heritage, when in fact it’s just a good excuse to be an animal abuser, criminal and a thug 🙄. I personally think it’s ok to call those people whatever fits as they really are the lowest of the low 😡

Why anyone would want to attend this horror spectacle, I don’t know.
It needs stopping.
I have never been before and i don't think i ever want to go now since i have never been can someone please tell me exactly what happens does money get involved

If it’s like our local horse fair it’s just a get together of travelling types to buy and sell horses. The horses are either tied up with nothing to eat or drink for hours while their owners socialise, or get ragged up the road to show them off. They are bought and sold using cash only. RSPCA and police stand by and watch them 🙄. Then there’s stalls for shopping which is where you find the puppies in cages :(

Thanks for the information

I have no issues with activists, Im glad someone is standing up for animal abuse (and yes I dont agree with the GN), however I imagine in this case they're probably scared of the travellers so dont want to get involved for their own safety...
