so its my first year of going to appleby, im really excited. i was just wondering what it is like and if there is anything that i need to watch out for. thanks

thanks, my mam was saying it will be really upsetting for me. i really want a stallion for my mare but i dont think it will happen. ill have to keep my eyes open

You might change your mind on breeding once you have seen what happens when there are too many foals produced. No finer place too see it than appleby or a market :(

BUT its an experience. Go and see it objectively :)

aww i think ill be in tears by the end of the day. wigton horse sales was bad enough. i dont think ill get a stallion from appleby its just one of those things

Agree with this, and be careful on the flashing lane you're liable to get squished if you don't move quickly.

Rather than using a stallion for your mare, why not buy a foal to bring on instead? Far to many unwanted horses around as it is and there is a good saying never to breed from your favourite mare, it can be a risky business.:(

So send her to a decent stud.....will cost you about the same but the stallion will be guarenteed STD free...which most Appleby types certainly wont be!

Thank you. your right i might just forget about that idea but i really want a foal so i can breed the foal again so i can always have a part of my horse forever. there is a nice stud with a friesian thats stunning. £500 per week thinking about that

Before you jump into the whole "I want a foal from my mare" you need to look at her, see what needs improving on and then chose a stallion that is likely to achieve that.
Picking a stallion because he is "stunning" is not going to get a foal that's fit for the purpose you want from it.

But what if your mare has a colt:confused:

For all it is lovely to have a homebred foal there is no guarantee that it will turn out to be just like the dam.

Honestly honey please read the BHS and world horse welfare's websites about breeding. Foals are being PTS, exported, neglected or sent to unsuitable homes every single day, and the field space of you having your foals could be used to save a cracker. Please consider taking in a needy unwanted foal instead. Just as cute, you will have done a good deed and you won't have risked your own mare :)

I AM SICK OF BLOODY APPLEBY :mad:

Driving home from the horse this morning, four wagons in a line blocking the whole A road, finally get past them, and there's another wagon drifting all over the road - the stupid ****** was clearly drunk, trying to light a ciggie, and was not even holding the reins. I found a copper in town and reported it.

There are horses everywhere, they are showing off in a town heaving with traffic for Jubilee and local celebrations, they are a pain in the a***. I fear for the safety of these poor horses, one always tethered to the side, one pulling. And the SHOUTING.....why do they have to SHOUT ????

I know I need to move away from here, can you tell ?:o:o

Please make sure you go with someone and try not to wander off on your own there is a story most years in my local paper of young girls getting attacked and assaulted. Horse aside look after yourself :o

ps, why anybody would want to go to that fair is beyond me - if you know anything about horses, some of the sights are lovely, but I promise you, some of the sights are not.

It is full of drunken louts playing up for women, playing up to make themselves look big, and playing up with the horses to make them seem impressive. There are very few genuine horsemen left. The atmosphere can be rough and unsafe.

Keep an eye out for Tinseltoes stolen cob--very distinctive crescent shape on the RHS of his face, dont approach sellers--find someone/Police/RSPCA to contact Trading Stds at the Fair who have microchip readers

Appleby fair is a disgrace....Shysmum i sympathise with you - they pass near our area and leave all their rubbish behind.....this week the Westmorland gazette ran a story about how one of the gypsies was moaning because he couldn't park his caravan in it's usual place and had been moved on as it was now illegal for him to park there. It's illegal for everyone - not just him - why oh why do they think they are above the law?

they ARE above the law, cos the coppers are to afraid to deal with them.

There were FIVE wagons lined up yesterday on double yellows and blocking a bus stop and the turning into six parking spaces in the centre of town - did the police do anything ? BIG FAT NO.

As there were no parking spaces, I tried to wait for hubbie on lines further up the town for a two second stop to collect hubs - police were on me in seconds. I told them what I thought of their pro-traveller policing style, and hubs had to walk home with the shopping.

Late last night there was a lot of police cars and fire engines flying towards the A66. Suspect it was the drunken idiot *sigh*.

Would be too heartbreaking for me. Dont think I'd be strong enough to cope with it. All those poor horse's with big men shouting and pulling them around. No thankyou.
