There is good and bad in all communities. My point was that this poor thing was left by the side of the road, and yes, the police and rspca are dealing with it. There's no way that anyone will come forward to claim it now they are involved, so I think we can rest assured that it's future is safe. As a poster put on the other appleby thread, a number of horses are put down out of view of the public during or after the fair - broken legs, exhaustion, etc. (she knows the Knacker man). So no, I don't think it is the "pretty pretty horse fair" that the Cumbrian Tourist Board would like us to think it is. *sigh*.

That was me SM, the knackerman came to pick up a dead ewe, told me about the job he had to do outside Clickham Farm, they take them away wholesale. The farm owner gets the money off the "travelling community" they build up to quite a number then the knackerman comes and collects them. The knackerman wont take them away untilthe farmer has the money from the travellers . The farmer makes quite a lot of money as it is all on his land. So this is hidden from the public, it shouldnt be.
 
I`m very glad its getting cared for now BUT lets not tar all gypsies with the same brush.

There is probably as much cruelty (intentional or otherwise) goes on amongst so called conventional horse lovers.

Basically if the animal is not going to make profit it is worthless. In their eyes good horses and ponies are treated like gold dust, those who don't make the grade are nothing and are treated as such. Literally. Yes, the same happens in many places. (Commercially) many rejected racehorses, sporthorses, showing animals, etc. often have no future bar the slaughterhouse, agreed.

The point is those supporting the travellers are actually saying it's okay to treat animals as non-entities. A trainer sending an unwanted/injured horse for slaughter may be vilified but it's okay for those who really don't care about the welfare of the animal to a point they know they can get away with simply leaving it wherever they drop it, knowing they can, is fine?

Monetary poorness is certainly not an issue for the old traveller clans. I know.
 
And you are presuming that they did abandon it.

I`m not saying they did or didnt but as some have said, tethering is a way of life and "maybe" they were giving it water. Nobody watched it for 24 hours I doubt.

Anyway, I stand by my statement. People shouldnt tar them all with the same brush.

You said "commercially" many horses have no future but this is partly true. Privately owned horses can be treated as badly. You just have to look at some RSPCA cases.

My point is just that Private owners (minority) can be as bad as gypsies (minority) are.
 
I expect there are some cruel people in the traveller community and some very kind ones.You don't have to be a traveller to be cruel trust me.

And yes, i have personally seen how they dispose of un-wanted ponies.....5 stuffed down a storm drain...at least 2 were confirmed as alive when put there..head first, one on top of the other......

They got him back :mad: Having left him for two days and nights, they found the field the police put him in, ripped off the abandonment notice, left the gate swinging - gone. :(

You could argue that they hadn't abandoned him in the first place, but two days is too long. :rolleyes:

Sorry this hasn't had a happy ending - I've hit the vino to console myself.

Thats awful. how could anyone leave their horse behind by accident! Its so cruel. i definitly think you did the right thing by giving water, the horses welfare comes first!xxx

I tar all people with the same brush, it's when they do wrong I disagree. And you have still suggested that because travellers have a 'way of life' it's okay to ill-treat animals as I have seen and know them being treated? Certainly there are cruel people in every walk of life, however sometimes an "Average Joe" has a successful prosecution and is given a sentence/restriction. I am fully aware of lifestyle and cultures from both communities. The fact remains that if a traveller commits animal cruelty often little or nothing is done. And they know that.

You only have to compare the Jamie Grey case (one of the very rare cases actually being made against a traveller,) to the number of complaints, false and otherwise, against the general public, farmers etc.

I have witnessed a horse driven to death then unharnessed and left at the roadside. Yes, not all are the same but when a group of people become so arrogant they have no qualms, no shame, no compassion and no fear from authority in doing such an act I would be the insane one not to think they are very wrong indeed.

I certainly have not suggested cruelty should be accepted because it is a way of life. You have taken my words completely out of context.

You have obviously seen "travellers" doing some seriously bad things, well I have seen some "Joe publics" doing some seriously bad things.

My point is that there is "bad" in all walks of life, NOT JUST gypsies.
