Hi all, hope you can help.

I am applying for insurance with Petplan (though if you recommend any other company please let me know), I just have a couple of stupid questions. They are asking if my horse has ever been unwell/injured and received vet treatment in the past - Well she had a hoof abscess in April that the farrier drained, all healed up - Do I have to disclose this to the insurer?

Also it asks if she has any vices or behavioural problems - She's had a traumatic farrier experience in the past and now hates farriers and kicks when being trimmed if not sedated - I assume I disclose this too? Is this needed for third party reasons? I know it seems obvious but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks in advance :D

If, in the future you need to claim on your insurance, they will ask your vet to give them a print out of all the treatment your horse has had - at least that is what NFU does. So they will be told that your horse once had a foot abscess. If you give your horse a prescription sedative for shoeing, they will also see that on the file, so it is best not to lie. That is what upsets Insurance companies the most.

I can't see anything in your post that would make an insurance co. unhappy.

Yup - disclose anything and everything regarding illness / injury & behaviour.

No excuse for an Underwriter to dispute a future claim that way.

Worse case senario they ask you for written confirmation from the vet that the abcess was a one off, and not connected to an underlying issue.

Ditto other posters. You need to declare anything done via the vet's as any insurance company will exclude any 'pre existing conditions' so if your horse had been treated previously for say COPD and whether or not you declare it they would NOT pay up if you tried to claim.
Be aware that anything you declare is likely to be excluded. A foot abcess treated by the farrier is unlikely to affect your insurance imo.
