I wonder if anyone can let me know roughly the current cost of having a pony put down by the hunt. I have had oldies done by them in the past but not for over 10 years - then it was something like a £50 donation.

Our hunt doesn't have a flesh wagon and in each case I took the pony to the kennels. I know some hunts will come out to do them at home. At the moment I hope I will be able to take the pony to them as before, but this is something we face this side of winter, and I'd like to be prepared for the cost whether we travel the pony, or have to call someone out.

I think we gave a £50 donation too, but as you say that was a few years ago.

If I could do it again I'm afraid I would also take the pony to the kennels or hunt stables as you most certainly don't want to see them winch it into the meat wagon - its very upsetting and undignified. However our huntsman is the most understanding and kindly man when it comes to this.

Why don't you give your huntsman a ring and have a chat to him about it. Bloody awful thing to have to go through though.

our YO has lost a couple of horses in the last 18 months which were pts and removed by the hunt.I think from what I recall the YO saying the charge was £200

Thank you all, provided the pony is able to travel then I will take him there, in the excitement of hearing hounds again for those few minutes he'll think he's twenty years younger - and I'd pay anything to take those years off him, if only I could.

It's horrid knowing this is his last summer, and I'm grateful to have the luxury, if that's the right word, of time to plan. I hope I get it right - having to call someone out if he deteriorated too much to travel would feel like I'd let him down, but far worse would be putting it off even longer because I was afraid of the cost.

it does vary but you could pay upto £200 which is what our local Pack charge mind you they do pick up .
Sorry you are having to face this

We took our old Pippa pony to the VWH in 2001, and I'm not sure what they charged. They collected our old boy - live - in 2004 and took him to the kennels to PTS and that cost £100, if that helps at all?

Hunts don't charge to PTS - it's the 'disposal' that costs! Although the meat can be fed to hounds, the offal has to be disposed of and many hunts have had to close down their incinerators because of the cost of upgrading to meet new regulations. And getting the 'waste' skip removed has increased in price 10-fold!

For putting a big chappie down at the kennels and disposal, I recently paid £150. For them coming to collect a mare put down by the vet - by injection - it was £300 as they can't use the meat.

Have a chat to the huntsman!

It around £200 ponds here, it was that in march when I thought the time had come.

Glad it had not, and he is going from strenth to strength, hope your pony does to
