I started using aquamax beddiing a few months ago and so far i think its brilliant. Does anyone else use it and if so any more tips on how i can get the most out of it. do you soak it first when putting a new bag in or do you just empty it unsoaked onto the top of your bed?

Hi

I tried it on Sunday and mixed it into a shavings bed. I sprinkled 4 bags onto floor, added water ontop and then laid shavings bed back down. Today is day 2 and I am very impressed at how big the bed is. My horse is so dirty and I always take out a barrow and a half and today it was only dry droppings and under half a barrow. Haven't needed to take out any wet yet.

Only thing I really don't like is the dust so am going onto Natures Best which is more fluffy shavings (exactly the same principle) and its cheaper than Aquamax which I paid over £7 a bag for. http://www.naturesbedding.co.uk/bedding-for-horses/

I definitely wouldn't add it unsoaked to the top of the bed. I'd if anything add it slightly dampened to the area where I have dug out the wet at the end of the first week.

I have found it is best used on it's own, not mixed with shavings.
Used for 2 years now, it is fantastic, don't find it dusty at all, maybe you aren't watering it enough?!
Used quite a lot of water when inititially setting bed off, but now when add a bag, depending on bed only add half to a full watering can. Find it best though just to keep sprinkling a bit of fresh on every few days, then don't water at all.
Less smell, less waste, cleaner rugs, easier to handle bags, works out more cost effective. Fantastic product imo, would never use shavings again!

I agree with you i dont find it dusty at all. i will start to soak it a bit first then before i put it down. How often do you dig the whole thing out?

I was thinking of switching my very wet 11.2 onto it. Currently using shavings over rubber matting with a layer of straw on top because he is so wet and his stall is very small so he permanently stinks of wee.

Would it work? What do I have to do to it?

well you need to get in touch with a supplier and its best to buy in bulk so then you have enough for ages. you empty about 10 bags (depending on the size of your stable) do it one by one and spray with water. sound wierd but you have to soak it quite a bit as it comes in pellets and they need to disintegrate. then you just need to get the hang of mucking out- i bought one of their fine tine forks from their website its got like a basket thing on the end. you pick the poos out with it and thats it. dont dig down into the bed, you need to be patient for a few days as when the horse wees it makes the bed underneath firm so you get a nice base. and just keep a light sprinkling on top. as the wee is all soaked in and it goes hard its nice and warm. its not hard like concrete mind you. only thing is the colour as it looks dirty and getting your head around not digging down into the bed every day.

Sounds good to me - I tried aubiose once but didn't really like it so have stuck to shavings ever since but there's so much waste with a little devil who pees and poos just about everywhere! Thanks.

The whole yard where my boy is is on it and it works very well, although they don't soak it first, just put a new bag in on top. The way they do it is to only take the worst of the wet out and then mix it in, this they makes the pellets mush up. Works well and no-one is stinky or yellow coloured

All the horses at my yard are on it as well, and it seems to be working for my gelding who is very messy and prone to box-walking if he gets stressed. I only muck out at the weekends but its really easy and I don't have to take much out so save loads of time

I changed to Aquamax a couple of months ago after finding i couldn't afford shavings anymore.
I'm over the moon with them (sad?) and wish i'd started using Aquamax years ago.
My gelding is on rubber mats, so i don't have a full bed. Shavings are not particularly absorbent - by comparison, Aquamax is incredibly absorbent.
With rubber mats, the pee runs underneath them and it does get quite stinky, but Aquamax stops this completely, as it soaks everything up.
I barely use a bag a week. I sprinks some bedding on the existing bedding then just water it a bit with a watering can.
Only small drawback is the bedding kind of gets everywhere on the yard, and i'm constantly sweeping up. I don't mind though - the benefits far outweigh this.
i also believe its brilliant for laminitis sufferers as it compacts in the hoof, giving support.
