hi again,

So my next horse is going to be an Arab ex racehorse (I had one before and DEFINITELY want another, problems and all), but i was wondering - i know there are lots of schemes for thoroughbred re-schooling and re-homing, but where do all the Arabs go?? Do they have a happier outcome than many of the TBs or worse...??? and where cna i buy one (sadly it won't be for a while yet but no harm in forward-planning...!)

thanks!

I don't know to be honest, if no one here can assist, why not call up a couple of racing yards and have a chat and try and gauge out what the sitaution is and where they might be sold or sent to!!

Someone at my horse's livery yard has one, he is gorgeous, but I don't know where she got him from.

They go to private buyers, arab racing isn't over run with unwanted horses like thoroughbred racing is. Some people just race there arabs for a few years and then bring them out of it and re train them for pleasure use and keep them.

Hi,

Every single one I have known, and I've known a lot, have gone on to do other things, sometimes they are sold on, but many times racing is only a chapter in their lives and they stay with their owners.

Sarahrees on here has a Vert Olive gelding that she jumps and does dressage with, my own mare went on to breed, do endurance and was a brilliant hunter. Many of them find their way into endurance and showing.

As for where to find one, the AHS website will have lists and is a good place to start, Arabian Lines and AOBG forums will also be helpful, there are sales at Newmarket too.

I have one. This is him in his racing days (I have permission to use the photo):

I bought him from the Ascot Bloodstock sales last year. Each year there are usually 40 odd arab racehorses sold after the thoroughbreds. He was owned by Sheikh Mohammed and most of the horses that get sold through Ascot sales are from his string.

My boy is now training as an endurance horse. He's the most sensible, sane, bold and brilliant horse you could ever wish to meet.

Arab racing is big business in the USA, France and the Middle East. In the UK it is an amateur sport with race meetings most weekends during the summer. Arabs are the original race horse after all!

OMG I'm really scared to look at those links as will DEFINITELY fall in love immediately...

thanks so much! good to know they usually have a pretty good chance of a nice life - maybe will go to Newmarket when i've saved up a bit! the last arab i had was absolutely wonderful, though wiht the typical racehorse traits of course but that's to be expected. and i was always very proud of him having won the Russian derby before he started SJing wiht me!

thank you!!

I would agree with this, I was loaned mine and re-schooled her> you have the same things to consider when re-schooling as you would an OTTRH thoroughbred.

She went back to her breeder to have foalies.
