Also in CR. Not sure if it is a suitable thread for this room, was just hoping there might be some Arab experts lurking...

'Harry' is a 2yr old Arab gelding, standing 14.3hh now should make 15.2ish - he is still very bum high.
Going grey unfortunately, want to do endurances on him in the future.

What does everyone think of his action? Bearing in mind he has done hardly any work in the round yard.

Also what do you think of his back end? Mum and I didn't like it but couldn't say why, but then we haved looked at many 2yr old (or any age) Arabs...

Thanks, Terry choc orange for looking!

I see what you mean - seems stiff at the hock but twisting or sliding inwards at the stifle in both directions.

As you say "Going grey unfortunately" you won't be disappointed at looking at none greying youngsters.

Looks very much like a young Arab I had years ago. Was from Procyon/Mikeno lines.

Mine chunked up quite alot from 4 upwards, he had a hell of a trot on him.

Not a fan, at all. To be a serious endurance prospect, you'd expect him to naturally cover the ground with loose but expressive paces, indicating an ability to cover ground effortlessly. This colt seems 'restricted' in his action, quite stiff at the hock.

What's his breeding, and where are you? I might be able to suggest I few young arabs I know of

He is obviously at that age where the back end is racing away from the front but I would walk away from this one.

Very tight through the hip and back, no hock flexion to speak of. Very telling he disunited in canter on both reins for no particular reason I could see. Rare for me to not be able to find anything positive to say, particularly about Arabs but this one is a no.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the other comments here on his movement - and from what I can see am not keen on his confo or type either.

Do you have photos/video/pedigrees of any other prospects?

Hello all!

Thank you very much for your thoughts/opinions and offers of help (I'm in Australia).
Sorry for the very slow reply things got slightly busy...

I didn't really like the way he moved, agree that he was too stiff and just wanted to see what others thought. The main thing that attracted us to him in the first place was his height (going to make 15hh min).
BUT it is all irrelevant as the owner sold him to a 'friend' the day after we went to look at him without even a courtesy call to give us a chance of putting in an offer

Instead yesterday went to look at this chap:

Much better action, will make 14.2, might at a push make 15hh as both his parent were tall (14.3 and 15.2) with a few tall stallions in his breeding, but he was a first foal...
He is 14hh now, at 2yrs and is quite bum high...so fingers crossed :)

Only flaw is a largish splint/bony growth near the top on the near-side front cannon from a hard knock - story is he broke into the feed room then paniked, not sure we believe it...
Its far enough forward not to interfer with any tendons, and below the joint. We're thinking that for the price $1000 AUD (630 GB pounds) we will take a gamble and if he isn't up to 80km+ endurances sell him on as a hack/kids pony in a few years.

Unless you have some horror stories of bony growths and hopping lameness...

When I was in NSW I picked up Horse Deals & judging by the amount of Arabs for sale I would not have thought you needed to buy anything that had issues. There are that many being bred that I would carry on looking, it's not as if you are in a hurry?

There used to be loads, not so many at the moment. There is no real rush but we would like to buy something sooner rather than later. Also since the Arab nations started paying top dollar for Aust horses prices for anything semi-decent confo wise has gone through the roof.
The other issues is height - we want something that is about 15hh, and there aren't many of that heigh around in NSW. Seem to be tons in Vic but a 9hr+ drive is a bit excessive... :)

Again, thanks for your help. Will let you know when we do finally get something..
