I was wondering what other people thought of the HOYS attitude to the complaints about a none Arab judge being allowed to judge the conformation at this years HOYS.

I dont know the first thing about Arabs but to me this seems very unfair and the general attitude towards the complaints received appears to be very harsh.

Would be interested to know what other people think.

Thanks.

Hmm yes I think it would be wrong to have a none Arab judge for this class and standard.

Arab conformation is shall we say 'unorthodox' although not necessarily to the detriment of the horse as theyre tough as old boots but you'd think those that qualify for HOYS would be pretty good among their peers and therefore worthy of a specialist eye to judge them

The judge in question, however, is extremely well known for judging every other type of horse and is very competent. She is also judging alongside a panel judge for Arabs, so is not just going to "do her own thing". Finally, HOYS is run under its own rules and not that of any society, so although they appear to discuss which judges are to be used, they can do exactly what they like. I bet that someone in the arab society was asked if it were OK and they said yes, not realising how much upset it would cause.

Given that there are 10 months before HOYS, I can bet that this judge will do her homework on arab horses and ensure that she does not look stupid when HOYS comes round.

A few years ago a non panel judge was due to judge cobs at HOYS. There were no complaints, and in fact, in the months before HOYS, this particular person took the panel exam and passed without any problem at all.

I have no doubt that the judge in question is an excellent one and a very knowledgeable one, this is nothing personal to them whatsoever.
But why are HOYS not using an AHS panel judge? There are plenty who would be delighted to be asked, I'm sure. It surely can't be for financial reasons given the cost to enter such classes, so why not use list judges?
I would expect that a lot of judges on the AHS panel would be disappointed at the situation too.

I competed in the ridden Arab classes at last years HOYS and the ride and conformation sections were judged, as is often the case, at the same time. I.e. the classes were split and half went in for the ride section whilst the other half were stripped and judged on conformation/type. Therefore the judge would be marking alone, not with the other list judge, until the final places were announced.
Given the expense and kudos of qualifying for such a show as HOYS, I feel that it is only right that the competitors are judged by someone who has passed the judging examinations as laid down by the governing body for that breed or type and has years of experience in doing so.
Maybe this particular judge will take the relevant examinations before HOYS 2008 but learning to assess Arabian type is something which imho cannot be learnt in a few weeks from looking at some books.

Despite all that I can't believe HOYS attitude

quote
He said that if AHS members were unhappy they could stay away from HOYS, adding: "There are so many championships trying to get to HOYS, if a class proves unpopular we might remove it and replace it with a more popular one."

It was because of this quote that I wanted to see what other people thought, because I thought it was quite a callous attitude but not knowing too much about showing at this level I thought I could learn something from it so thanks to everyone for their comments so far.

To be honest, it reads like they don't want the arabs there anymore but rather than just coming out and sayig so, by doing it this way they can remove the class due to lack of entries and blame the arab people.

Yes it does sound like that doesn't it?
Are the arab classes not very big then?

I thought it was a very callous attitude.
I don't have an Arab but I would be very offended by that

I don't think you can call them callous.

It is their competition and they can have whatever rules they like. Offering a FIFO option (Fit In or F*** Off) 10 months ahead seems quite reasonable.
