Arab horse tips wanted

I am an experienced horse rider and handler. I have just been given my first arab horse (gelding), he is only 6 years old and has just started to learn to jump, he also inst very good to hack out (according to his last owner). Is there any advice someone could offer me about dealing with Arabs or tips to help?

Ask, never force, and build a trusting bond that will last a lifetime. Don't listen to the anti-Arab brigade who will try to stereotype your boy by telling you Arabs are mad, flighty and useless. Any Arabs like that, then their problems were created by people. Remember they were bred as warhorses and slept in the tents with the Bedouins so they had to have good temperaments. Enjoy your jumping. I currently have 3 competing successfully BS yet, the 'experts' will try to tell you Arabs can't jump. They will also tell you they don't like water, yet mine will happily go well into the sea. It's all about trust and, through that trust, instilling confidence. Have fun because they are the great fun horse.
 
Time, trust and patience are key. They are super intelligent and hugely trainable - but also easy to train into bad habits! They also have a VERY long memory! They will seriously hold a grudge lol. Firm, fair and consistent handling is a definite must.

Re the hacking - can you hack in company so he can get his confidence up? Most Arabs will put their life on the line for you - once they know they can trust you. Go out in company til you get to know one another :)
 
I have 2 and they are very rewarding. So human it's unbelievable and so loving. Tips might be as others have said ask don't force, both mine are very quick learners and get bored easily so stimulate them with interesting activities :)
 
I have two who are completely opposite in most things but, as previously mentioned, once you get that bond they will do whatever you ask. Ask being the operative word. LOL I'm sure once you get to know each other you will have no trouble hacking out alone and in the meantime enjoy him :-) What's his breeding?
 
Def ignore the haters. I find them to be the most rewarding amazing horses. A friend has had one for 3 years, and so many people told her not to get her. She now has her horse of a lifetime.
Mine all jump, but they do look to the person who they bond with.
 
Agree with a lot that has been said :)

Also, with most of mine when the ears, head and tail go up, they are saying "Look mum, scary thing over there, I saw it, big scary thing"

Your correct response should be

"Thanks for showing me the scary thing, it's nothing to worry about, I have this"

Even more than other breeds these guys see things, and they are are bright, loyal, and want to make sure that you know about any potential hazards.

That particular case was a very said one, made worse by the fact that after his death there was a lot of family feuding, and money being moved. My friend has one of the then youngsters, and she is the most amazing horse.
 
It was awful - a lot of fallout so I understand. It was very,very hard for the Inspectorate on the ground as I recall. :( So glad one of the horses ended up in a happy home, I'm sure they all did - and OMG did I want one, but had no time to have a horse back then..

Will see if I can find one, my friend bred several horses from her, including a couple that have done really well in the showring. She also took on one of the mini's!
 
I have one, he's not had the best start in life and was pretty scary when I got him, 18 months on, love him to bits and he's never hurt me, the bond is the thing you have to get, I've been around horses all my life, then had a 12 year break, then got an Arab! Steep learning curve, nothing like I remember, but we're getting there :)
 
Welcome to our world......

Our three purebreds are all very different. One is a very intelligent, chain smoking workaholic who would do absolutely anything for you and thinks he's indestructable. One is an ex famous boyband member who is now out of the limelight but is a bit 'special' and thinks the world should still worship him (don't you know who I am???!). The other is a young intelligent boy who is very studious and wants to go to university and learn stuff (although may play the odd cheeky prank on the way). They're all absolutely bombproof though, even the youngster.

Watch out, they're very addictive - I started out with one and now have three purebreds and a partbred.
