Any tips people on how to get my mare tucking up her front legs and thus making a getter shape over a fence she really dangles them and so jumping is a big effort although she is keen .!

Agree with kat, x poles and A frames!! Although I have done loads of these and my horse still dangles!! Just her way and she very rarely touches a pole so just leave her to it

You may find that she works it out when the fences get bigger, some horses are a bit lazy until the jumps get challenging!

cross pole spreads - so put two cross poles right up next to each other to create a spread but the "back bar" is a cross aswell

Tried higher cross pole today (on the lunge not brave enough to ride it:) she tucked up a tiny bit but still went incredibly high to get over she didnt struggle at all it just would be very hard to sit as she just seems to go straight up and down, do you think keep practising and she will start to figure it out or buy an air jacket!!! She is a very green 13yr old.

the cross poles soumd like a VERY good idea! but also, i would try putting a ground pole about half a stride infront of the spread too as this would make her arch over it rather than straight up & down. Also if you aren't jumping very big then some ponies dont feel the need to round so it might get better as you jump larger. (only if your jumping small though, if not i'd try the ground pole idea) good luck ;)

Mine kept doing that and nothing helped, but the best thing we tried was, my instructor stood at the side of the jump and as we took off to go over it she lifted the pole slightly... made hip jump it properly! Not sure it's a very conventional method, but it worked :)

I think you will find that she improves when the jumps get big enough that lifting her whole body higher becomes more effort so she picks up her feet as well.

I would try the ^ poles on the fence as this works well.

If she is jumping very up and down rather than arching over try lots of spreads, ascending spreads are good, and inviting.

When you do jump cross poles or uprights put a pole on the ground in front and behind the fence, keep it in quite close to the fence at first so that she isn't being forced to alter her jump and there is no chance of her stepping on the poles. The optical effect of the poles will tend to open up her jump. You can open the poles up wider graduallyto improve the jump.

Grid work and placing poles will also help to encourage her to take off earlier and stretch more so do lots of grid based exercises. Carol Mailer has a book of grid exercises that would be worth a look. You can still build your fences with ^ poles or ground poles if you need to encourage her to pick up.

Don't do what Amy567 suggests, it is an accident waiting to happen, and I am horrified that an instructor would do it!

My arab hasn't done much jumping but she fold her legs really well. She just needs to learn that she doesn't have to clear it by quite so much!!

That is exactly what my 9 year old Arab does. I am a real coward and only do little jumps but he still terrifies me! - He actually used to jump poles but we have done so much pole work now he has calmed down a bit. Now I am doing the same with little jumps and he is slowly realising that they're not going to bite!
