Good evening. I am looking for some advice with regards to breeding from my Pure Bred Polish Arab Mare. She has good confirmation, nice temperament and I think was probably bred to race. Should I stick to a Polish Stallion, or Straight Egyptian. I would like to breed so that I could do Showing and Endurance. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The mare is grey.

Where in Wales are you?

Have a look at the Bychan stallions, there might be one that's takes your fancy there. Just because a horse shows there is no reason at all it can't do another job as well, as plenty have proved. Master Design is one of my all time favourites, I love that horse. Oh, if you get the chance, do go to the stud Open Day too, it is well worth it, beautiful horses, spectacular scenery and the food is pretty good too :D World class horses, down to earth people.

They are mainly shown but I've seen Rhodri out hunting on them occasion too.

At least in Wales you will have plenty of stallions to choose from, the place is crawling with Arabs.:D

...and because I am a nosey pedigree junkie, what's her breeding please?

In addition to the above very good suggestions, I would also suggest looking at both the Endurance GB website and the Arab Horse Society Premium Scheme website for "doing" arabian stallions. There are several very good stallions out there competing at all levels in endurance, some with good show records to their names. AHS Premium stallions are either NaStA performance tested or, for some older stallions, proven by progeny performance. Again they include horses with successful show records (including HOYS) in their own right, for example Rusleem and my own Marcus Aurelius amongst their number. You also have Vlacq stud in North Wales specialising in performance arabians, endurance in particular.

My advice would be to spread the net as wide as possible based on performance and after that narrow in to the bloodlines and horse that you think will best suit your mare.

Have fun looking :D

Ohhhhh, apart from HTobago (of course) and Master Design another stallion I would have loved to have used was Cordon. I don't know if he is still around, but he was a lovely stamp of a horse.

I used to do him when he was in training (racing, back in the early 90's) and he was a complete gentleman, loved him.

When I bred arabs in the UK I used Ablak, a Ben Rabba son, and a son of Sarawan (by Marawan) on a Crabbet mare and had some really decent colts from them.

What can I say?! Thanks for all the votes for my boy (H Tobago).:)

Avonbrook is right too - there are a lot of very nice performance stallions out there too, especially her chap Marcus Aurelius!

Tobago is a show stallion, but a lot of performance breeders (endurance and sport-horse) are using him.

Do you have any photos you could post here? And your mare's pedigree? These would help us a lot in advising on which stallion would be best for her.

But I can say that there is no reason why you should stick to Polish lines, or go for 'straight' anything - most of the best Arabs nowadays are a mix of different bloodlines.

(Master Design is now in the Middle East (Dubai, I think), I'm afraid.)

What can I say - everyone has recommended the gorgeous Tobago. I too would recommend him.

If you want to breed a bit taller, with a little more bone and also great for endurance you could consider a Shagya stallion. We have used Tatianus who stands in France but AI is available for him. You can find him on

www.shagya.fr they have English on the website.

Our own 3YO stallion has just been approved for the stud book but won't be available at stud this year. Showing off just a bit here is a little video of him. Under Milkwood who is 158cm, his handler is over 6'.
