Okay so iv always been told that arabs cant jump? Obviously they can but not good enough to compete. Is this true?

I love arabs and have always wanted one so im thinking its about time to get one :)

Also whats max weight and height a 14.1/2hh arab can carry comfortably?
Last question is how cheap can i get an arab(broken/unbroken/anything) as every one iv seen is far above my budget :(

lol - arab's do jump, infact they are very very good, BUT and it's a mahooosive BUT - THEY have to be in the mood for it, if they don't want to - they won't and there is no hope in *** you can make them. Which unfortunately is why people rarely do in shows!

If you are desperate to have an arab and a jumping one i would go for the Anglo-Arabs, I have one, she looks like an arab and jumps too! :) price wise, it's difficult to say nowadays as the market is sooo poor at the moment, so can't help you there.

Arabs CAN jump!!! I have a purebred and an Anglo (50%) and both were/are super jumpers.

Mine are 15.1/2 and i'm 5ft8.

The other Arab gurus on here will be better advised of prices breeding etc. Both of mine are Crabbet bred and I love em!

In France the national stud has arab stallions in their catalogues who are there due to their jumping performance, so yes they do jump. I guess it all depends what you mean by an arab. When I was a child I always assumed that they were the prettly little dish-faced horses but if the French arabs are anything to go by they are much more an all-round sport horse and the dish face isn't at all apparent.

Lol i have a arab x hanovarian! try telling her she cant jump! she will do any thing for you and boy will she get you out off trouble! she absoloutley loves it! fast and scopey! and can turn on a 6spence! she is 15.1hh!

They can jump really well and have a lot of potential some of them!!! My mare can jump really well, BUT she can be unpredicatable (only in Sj though)!!! I have done unaffiliated showjumping, Riding for my local riding club at area team events, ODE's, Hunter Trials, Eventers challenges and XC which she really enjoys.

My mare is exactly 15hh (Crabbet) and I'm 5ft5 and weigh approx 8.5 stone. But she could easily carry alot more weight. They are quite hardy animals.

Shes been fab and very versatile. We've done county level showing, etc and were doing our first BD at the end of the month.Even though she is quite seasonal and quirky I wouldnt change her.

You would be able to get some reasonably priced arabs if you look about.

Ohhh pure bred arabs however (i stand to be corrected!) - this is what i got told years ago :o have one less vertebrae this does affect there bascule over fences!

If you can deal/want a young un, try for one of those.
www.masonsstud.co.uk have some super youngsters for sale (might be a bit on the young side ???) they are mainly partbred and anglo, but beautifully bred. (im biased of course, its where the Gingerman above came from :D)

Well mines about 3/4 and she defiantly can jump. (BSJA jumper/ HOYS pony)
However she is pretty fine so I wouldn't let over 10stone ride her. But she's 22 now aswell and still jumping!
If you want a good jumper, Arab x Welsh is a good combination. Mine was 2000, 7 years ago at age 14 with winnings in all fields

Don't diss an Arabs jump!

I've got a 14.2hh "typey" little arab mare and I'm 9.5stone and 5ft8. She's quite deep through the girth though (my friend has a similar height arab gelding and I'd look ridiculous on him).

I don't know if she can jump. Someone has jumped her in the past but only once and said she was very genuine but I don't know much more than that. I'm working on her schooling at the moment and it's not her favourite pastime... ;)

Try the ads on arabian lines website or contact the smaller arabian studs as they might know of something suitable.

I have one of those arabs that won't jump, not sure that he can't, he just doesn't see the point! But that's fine by me, as I'm not inclined towards jumping anyway. On the question of weight, my boy's a fit and healthy 13 year old and stands at 14.3hh, I'm around 10st and he carries me no problem (when I bought him a year and a half ago I was nearer 11st, and he didn't have any problems then either) Lost the weight keeping up with him :)

That sounds just like an Arab I used to have. He really, really could not see why you would want to jump something that you could walk around! We did try to get him jumping and the only way was to make the fence look solid. He would just trot/canter straight through anything with poles or that he could see through. The picture of Ash makes me smile too - neither the aforementioned nor the one I have now would dream of going into water. It once took me three-quarters of an hour to get one of them to walk across a tiny little stream. They're more likely to grow wings and fly than get their feet wet!

Anglo arabs are used alot in eventing! Part or full bred. And many show jumpers are. I have a part bred anglo and his jump is insane! He jumps hedges walls show jumps, anything! Don't let someone tell you arabs can't jump because there so athletic! It's like some people say cobs can't... I know many who can.

Faithkat- yep that sounds like my boy, why go over what you can go though or around?! He may not see why he should jump, but in his defence he will wade through rivers and monster hiding puddles quite happily :)

Mine can jump...he cannot understand why he should want to though:D

Arabs are the smoothest most comfortable ride ever. Love them....nothing else compares.

Make sure you're up to the job of owning an arab though- no offense intended, not everyone clicks with the 'arab way'.....which is why they can easily be spoiled.

However....if he/she trusts you, respects you and bonds with you ....its the ultimate relationship:)

Of course arabs "can" jump, just the same as any breed of horse "can" jump. All of the arabs and part breds I have ever ridden have jumped quite nicely.

Arabs lack the scope for top level competition because their size and conformation isn't ideally suited to jumping, just like it isn't ideally suited to dressage, and just like a cob or a native isn't likely to get to the top in either sphere. But if you aren't looking for top level competition more RC or lower levels affiliated then an arab is no more or less likely to be a good jumper than any other breed. In fact I would say you might have a better chance of a good jumper up to say 3ft than you would if you bought a cob.....

Arabs are smashing allrounders if they are trained to be, but sometimes people don't train them with anything other than the showring in mind which can limit their careers somewhat.

Anglo arabs, and some other crosses can be fantastic sports horses though, capable of higher level competition, Tamarillo is a part bred arab (less than 50% arab) and we can safely say that he can jump.

My Arab loves to jump, but lacks confidence for higher jumps.

You have to remember the Arab is a war horse and designed to safely carry you into battle and home again. Going over jumps rather than around them is a silly waste of energy and time;)

Obi is a 14.3hh Crabbet Arab and can comfortable carry 13 stone, plus light tack over 20 miles. Now he is older, my lightweight rider (7 stone) has the honour :)

A budget of £1000 should be able to get you a nice Arab. Look at Arabian Lines and perhaps post on their forum, it's very well attended and there will be someone in financial straits wanting to give you a bargain;)

Faracat you beat me to it, Marcus loves his jumping and so far has turned his hoof to all sphere's :D:D

My ginger arab on the other hand really doesnt see the point !!

This is a pic from the early 1990s, when Obi was four and I was a teenager.

Neither one of us thought we'd survive the jump
