Its the same as the spanish do with their long manes so there may be some pictures on the spanish sites.
I have my plaits much higher and more on top of the neck than in the photo, mostly because it really keeps it out the way of you hands. It is just like a tail plait but you only pull or add hair to the bottom . when you start start with a small amount of hair the important thing is that you have the mane really well combed through. especially if its really long you need to make sure that you keep the 'bunches' of hair as 3 clear bunches, oh goodness i hope this makes sense, sometimes if the mane is thin you will need to do a couple of plaits without adding hair , this will stop it pulling and also from falling out, you also need to keep it quite tight. These are just a few tips i'm sure there will be other members that have some more but in the mean time i hope that gives you a little clue on how to start. It does look lovely and im sure it will look smart on your horse and keep along mane tidy.

It's basically a one-sided French plait - you start with a section of mane at the top (by the poll), split into three sections, then plait, adding in a section of hair from the top every second fold-over.

Personally I like he plait to sit on the crest of the neck (very tight), however, some plait so it graduates down the neck - here is a pic of one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/96735201@N00/183947123/

If someone tells me how I will post a pic of my boy with the tighter (on the crest) style plait

Hope this works - here is a pic of my boy plaited:

Hi Pasha,

When you finish your plait what do you do with the plait at the wither, leave it or fold it under? I used to fold it and weave it back through the neck plait. Just thought I'd ask as I've seen them folded, woven and just dangling and wondered what you did.

There is a very helpful step by step guide for photos in the Gallery. If I can get photos on here, anyone can :

Enfys, I fold the plait over and secure it with bands like a mini bobble - because I plait so tight to the crest there isn't room for it to be folded back in - guess it's just personal preference but I don't like a bit hanging down

Interesting how different people do this...I take one section from above plait, then one from under, then above, then under etc and end up with plait right at top along crest. My boy does have a v thick mane in the middle! I usually fold the end up as well, although it almost tucks under his saddlecloth usually!

Thanks so much for all your help guys... i think i like them when they gradually get longer down the neck.. i am going to print this off and try it at the weekend!!! (my poor horse!!)
