I'm sure many of you have seen the videos that are posted on social media from time to time of the way that Arabs are shown both here in Europe and elsewhere in the world. I have started a petition to try to do something and so that those who wish to make themselves heard can do so - please visit and sign the petition here

If you want to see the sort of behaviour that I am trying to stop - there is a link below to a youtube video - be warned it is not pleasant viewing ...

The Arab showing world needs a gigantic kick up the backside. I blame the owners too they know full well their horses will be beaten and shanked into the frozen pose. If this happens in public we can all imagine what goes on behind closed doors (actually I couldn't until I saw those other videos on FB - you just couldn't make it up).

Signed. It's so upsetting :( I also recently signed a petition against "soaring". I saw some horrific videos of the treatment of Tennesee Walking Horses and was so shocked. I can't believe that people would want to treat their horses that way :(

I hate arabian showing, I won't even watch it anymore because it makes me see red. It isn't only the handlers that need educating, although their actions are despicable as far as I am concerned, it is the Judges and the governing bodies - yes you, AHS, for a start.

If the Judges ceased to place horses that were shanked then it would stop, same as in everything, bad manners, fat horses, Big Lick TWH etc, etc. If only the Judges would step up to the mark, trouble is, money talks, and the Arabian show circuit is a small world with many influential people, and kick backs, and any Judge that does make a stand is not used again :( Vicious circle.

There are many, many people in the Arabian world who detest what they see, mainly they step away from the showing thing and stick to performance though.

That video didn't make pretty watching but I attended the AHS nationals for the first time ever and something must have been said /done as didn't really witness any excessive shanking or such. Yes you have the brigade outside the ring whooping the horses up *and it gets bloody noisy! ! But all in all pleasantly surprised. Watched the senior geldings and hoping to go and watch the stallions Saturday.

Good to hear :)

Any excessive lungeing? plastic bags on whips etc though?

AdorableAlice was there for their regional show the other week and was not impressed! I went to the nationals years ago and felt that a few of the older horses were well shown on a loose line and seemed to enjoy the experience, the rest- not so much. It's almost like teenagers trying to make their horses look more wild than they really are to make them look better.

Signed.

A comment to keep this one the front page so hopefully more will see and sign.

I just don't get it. It's not showing off the beauty of the animal. More a show of human dominance and ignorance. Sickening.

I only watched 2 seconds of that.
Poor youngster, bewildered, confused, trying to please, threatened... a horrible display.

I've heard that many Arabian "trainers" use electric cattle prods behind closed doors. Judging by the extreme reaction of the horses in the 2nd clip, I wouldn't be surprised if those rumours are indeed true. What satisfaction do the owner's get seeing their horses shown in this manner?

can someone explain to me why they hold the whip up above their heads? it looks like they are threatening to smack the horse one?
also do judges want to see miss behaving horses? as they all seemed to do it infront of the judges?!

I think they want the horse to stand with it's head very high and the whip is used as a threat to make them back off. Same with yanking at head

I might be wrong though

Signed.

I truly hope that these horrible methods of 'showing off' horses, very soon becomes frowned upon and strictly not allowed in any show ring.

Signed.

I have an arab. I hope to show him, (well, I've been saying that for three years and still haven't lol) I was in touch with his breeder and she came up to 'teach' me how to get him 'show-ready' and advised I use a plastic bag on a lunge whip and chase him round the school to 'see his natural movement'.

No thanks.

He is natural enough without fear.

Blimey! what a sheltered life I've had......having spent quite a few years now messing about with my warmbloods, TBs, natives etc (anything but arabs really...) - I had no idea that this is what went on in the arab showing world. This is very, very depressing and I can't believe all those people find it acceptable to treat those animals in that way.

Disgusting. Signed. Is that video at an English or US show? A bit of me wanted to see one of those handlers getting a couple of pointy arab feet over their nasty heads - maybe it would have knocked some sense into them?

In Aachen, the All Nations Cup. http://www.all-nations-cup.org/
'Europe's most prestigious arabian horse show'

They are taught to 'target'/ reach for the whips but :p.

Thank you so much everyone that has signed - please keep this going - we are almost at 500 signatures now - I really want to get this to the point where they have to stop and take notice .... please share with all your contacts so we can get as many signatures as possible ... Jennie

IME senior geldings are the most reserved, there are plenty of UK handling videos that are pretty poor tbh and just things like (I have literally just googled and not struggle to find!):- Also it really frustrated me that the horse would start floaty trotting- everyone whoops- horse stars cantering/pronging/gets wound up so what is the point :p.

look in the background at the audience... is it really necessary for someone else to be waving a plastic bag in the air..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtqs3b0c-7k

why are we waving a plastic bag and making it canter in circles?
