Hi all,

My New forest mare for the past couple of nights has been soaked through with sweat after being in her stable for about an hour. The first night I thought it was because of the wind noises scaring her but there was no wind last night and she was the same. The sweat is round her chest/armpits/belly and then you can see the heat coming off her and it collects on the roof of the stable and then drips on her, it was quite wet out yesterday so that added to the humidity in the stable. Someone suggested she was just hot because only a couple of weeks ago they were out in -3 degrees and now it's 12 degrees and she's simply too hot (she does have a bear like fluffy coat at the moment) I'm wondering whether to electric tape her a little area out in the yard so she can stand outside. I've never had this happen with her before and have had her 14 years, she is well in her self, eating and drinking fine. Any ideas/experiences?

Thanks

Mine was blanket clipped and was still a bit sweaty under the back of her belly. It really is mild at the mo and I would have thought they have the coats to deal with the cold weather we have just had. My girl is having her work ramped up alot so she has just had a hunter clip- omg, no wonder she was hot, she had the most incredibly thick coat, my heavy duty/brand new baldes clippers could be heard groaning!

Hi karenjj, my shetland mare has the same symptoms she is sweating the minute she goes into her stable at night, she is out all day and dries out but within an hour she is very hot I too thought at first she had the starting of colic but she eats & drinks ok she is only ridden once a week so I am loathed to clip her but its horrible to see her looking bedraggled she is like a hairy yak at the moment and leaving her out isnt possible.

My mini shets are like hairy yaks too,a nd they sweat when they come into the stable. I've decided to leave them out and they seem much happier. They have access to the stable, and there is plenty of hay in there, but they haven't been in for days.

Yep!! My Cob is exactly the same! he is a really itchy/ticklish horse at the best of times, so it was driving him crazy on the first day mid last week.

His coat is now coming out in BUCKETS (was previously so woolly he's been out naked in the coldest weather as long as its not raining.. rugs annoy him so he's happier without) so at least the sweating is not the problem any more. I am getting up even earlier so that I can give him a really good groom in the mornings and repeating when he comes in at night to try and avoid him getting too itchy.

No doubt the stupid weather will be minus about a million again next week so it'll be rugs from then on.. Everything seems to think its spring already!

Yes, that's normal for mine if they have to stay in, the warmest one was coming out sweaty when it was -6 overnight! If they are in the stables regularly long enough for overheating to be a problem then I clip off as much as is necessary, which again for the warmest one was a full clip last year. I do keep mine out as much as possible though and with the early bad weather we had I haven't clipped this year.

Even my thin haired horse has been sweating, its because its been so warm and they've had coats for -12 temperatures!!! It's getting colder again tomorrow so dont worry too much!

All mine sweating today. It has gone from -20 to + 10 in a few weeks which is a massive delta. If I believed it was staying I'd be de-rugging (only 2 rugged both TB!)

Yep, Tank pony is getting a bib clip. A farmer friend said he sometimes clips the calfs kept in barns as they sweat up & are succeptible to pneumonia.

this post is making me feel better bout my weirdo horse lol she was in a mw in all the sub zero temps and is now down to a a thin old stable sheet and still sweating when in at night but as i expect it to get colder and she isnt a heavy or hairy horse was reluctant to clip or de-rug further through fear of her getting a chill. If she'd of been a fat and furry i wouldnt of throught twice abotu it being odd she was so hot but shes a dainty fine haired creature on a yard of fat and furries and out of them all shes the hottest in the thinist rugs!!! i think she must just be a naturally hot animal
