Do people either love them or hate them? 'Know of a gorgeously well put together appaloosa foal (white with black leopard spots everywhere) that will eventually make a really good looking 148cm - very tempted to buy and if I do, he'll have a great home for next 4-5 years. Plus he'll be professionally broken and riding when the time comes so when's he's for sale, he'll be doing everything he should be doing for his age. But does the colour put some people off or in your experience, does it generate more interest? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Yes, I do think it's a love or hate thing with them.

Lots of people seem to be very keen on them, I personally don't like them at all.

It would be dull if we all liked the same

Is this just a colour thing or temprement too?
Personally I like the look of them, do they have a reputation in any other way, ie handling?

Lots of people like appaloosa's and coloured horses and ponies. I love them. I used to have the most beautiful red leopard spot. she used to win all the ridden showing classes ( and many inhand). So yes there is a market for them.

I love them would defo have another! i must admit i do think some are prettier then others same with coloureds depending on how well marked they are and how they are put together. In my experience ive never really met one i haven't liked.

oh but I hate marmite lol

I really dislike spotty horses that have no pigmentation around there faces and wouldnt buy one as can imagine the nightmare with sun burn in the summer, they are also reknown for not having much hair it is unusual to get one with a good mane and tail as they seem to have one or the other or sometimes neither which again would put me off. However a friend has just bought a stunning knabstaper he is 16.3 and very very striking to look at and a lovely easy boy to deal with.
As in most cases appaloosa is the colour i dont think you can say much about tempermant i knew a 11hh appaloosa pony that was the spawn of satan and as i said above a 16.3hh that is lovely.

I really don't like them. I don't like their eyes, the mottly skin and the rubbish mane and tails!

In the same vein I wouldn't buy something with blue eyes, they give me the creeps.

However it must be said that Appy's seem to demand a premium, so some must like them!

Yeah me too..and marmite flavour crisps..but hate marmite !

On the subject of the post though don't like the look of them personally. It's a good job we all like different types so that all our ponies can be adored !

Hate, hate, HATE marmite.

An appy is just a horse, some are better put together than others, I can take them or leave them, but like JM, I buy because they sell on.

I don't particularly like or dislike them - to quote some famous horseman "a good horse is never a bad colour".

Very true

If the horse or pony does the job you want it to do, and has the temperament you want, then it doesn't matter about the colour!!

i'd never say i didn't like any colour

- i'm a horse addict whatever their colour or breed. i JUST like horses!

Oh yes they are definately like marmite!! I quite like them (I do have one though) but not ALL of them (don't much like the few spots)!! I'm never offended if anyone doesn't like my mare as I don't expect everyone to like all the same things, same as I don't particulary like gypsey cobs for example.

I love them!

Though i do quite agree some are nicer looking than others. I have quite a range of them because of breeding. The only downside is some of them really dont have a good mane or tail. Though my stallion is fully appy and he has a great mane and tail on him sliver aswell, am putting him forward to be licensed next year i think.

can i ask a numpty question, what is the difference between a appaloosa and a knabstaper?

I think an Appaloosa is of American origin & A Knabstrupper is Danish I think. Different breeds but spotty coats.

I've had a couple & both were lovely horses, but very keen & excellent jumpers.

Love them- have them and love and have marmite too!!
Temperments can't fault, but wispy manes can be a pain. Would defo have another one, but maybe I am biased as bred my boy!

Appies and Knabs are two totally different breeds! Appies are more stock horses, where Knabs are warmbloods.

Also, just because something has spots doesn't mean it's an Appaloosa!

Thank goodness someone has said it before me! They must be over 14.2, have mottled skin (mine looks solid chesnut until you get close) striped hooves and a white sclera round the eye.The temperement can be interesting

as they tend to be very bold and bright, you have to keep them in line or they will walk all over you. They are however very trainable and are quick to learn. There is some good info on the BAPS website.

No, in the same vein that anything coloured isn't necessarily a paint, pinto or a gypsy vanner.

It could be a knabstrupper, a reg appaloosa, a POA or anything else for all I care, but it IS still an appy if I'm trying to tell someone which horse I want bought out of a bunch of 20 in a stockyard. Ask for the Knabstrupper and they'd probably think I am being obscene
