Are boy dogs easier than bitches ?

Just wondered as i've been offered a bullmastiff bitch from the pound. I passed the rescue home checks the other night and am looking to re-home.

I have always had boy dogs and they've been very easy and I wondered if the added hormones of a female brought any added complications ? Are they bossier, more dominant or is it literally down to each dogs personality as to what you get.

Also any added health implications with a bitch.

Thankyou.

I've always opted for bitches as I think of them as being better behaved! Plus, they don't cock their leg against your hay bales! ;) I think so long as they are spayed there are no greater health risks.

Thanks Puppy, yes she's been spayed now, apparently she was used as a breeder and then chucked out. She is 3.

I think it probably is down to the individual dog, but I have 2 girls and 1 boy and I definitely think my girls are easier, more loyal and biddable in general. If you are not intending to breed I would suggest speying as Pyometra (sp) is a real possibility later in life and is a killer. As Pups says, girls do not cock their legs up anything, my IWS had a delightful habit of peeing up the side of the back door frame and once he formed the habit it was really hard to stop him having a crafty pee if you werent on guard by the door. All in all it is probably a personal preference and much depends on the dogs personality. Good luck with your new doggie.

Poor love! How many litters can she have had by 3?! :( Sounds like she needs and deserves a loving home like you now :)

I certainly haven't found my bitches to be at all bossy or dominant, not even my GSD, but instead loyal and loving :)

I only ever have bitches for one simple reason, I like stroking my dogs tummies and I don't like a willy in the way ! I can't bear it if dogs sexy either. It is almost a phobia with me - silly I know.

With Whippets I know people say the bitches are more disobedient and more likely to go off hunting, but as I have never had a dog I can't comment. I know my dogs are pretty well behaved for whippets and spend about 90% of their time off the lead.

Iam another one who is all for the bitches. Dogs lift their legs on everything and I don't think its very pleasent. (Another one too for stroking tummy minus the willy!) I've never had a problem training bitches, and glad she has been speyed as that will eliminate problems.

Ha Ha i've always had boy dogs and have one now but i've never had a willy problem tbh, that aspects not even on my radar. He does spray when we're out but its not OTT or intrusive. Would be very weird seeing a girl squat I think.

LMAO!! Snap!! That said I love my little boy to bits he's more affectionate than the girlies - they like their cuddles but aren't the same. I honestly think it depends on owners' gender too sometimes. Like my dad prefers bitches my mum prefers dogs, the dogs seem to prefer mum and bitches seem to prefer dad.

Jimmy's never been an overly "sexy" dog but did have to be castrated for cocking his leg up in the house esp. getting on the dining room table and cocking up mum's vase of flowers (which I found hilarious even though I know it's naughty!!) His temperament I feel isn't really different to the girls, the only thing I find is if Jim has a squabble with one of mum's boys it gets forgotten and they're fine, whereas Millie and Mouse have a scrap and that's that they never forget and now have to be seperate most of the time. That could just be a Terrier thing though

Every dog is different of course, but I think bitches are slightly easier than males to keep. The bitches we've had (who have all been spayed I might add) seem to be less interested in sneaking off and disapearing into the woods at the back of the yard to go hunting, and of course you don't have the problem of leg cocking all over the yard, your hay bales, etc.

Personality wise, both the bitches and dogs we've had all seem to have been as equally affectionate and soppy as each other :)

There is alittle difference, in some breeds bitches are easier and more bidable in regard to training, otherwise I dont see a huge difference I have 5 dogs and 5 bitches, I do prefer whippet dogs though (strange)

We have had dogs and bitches (GSD/Irish Setter/labs/mastiffs) and tbh i think we always had less problems from the dogs and they were generally more willing to please. But bitches are lovely too but do have a mind of their own sometimes. I think you just learn to work with the way they are if you know what I mean. I wouldnt be put off by a bitch at all.

Hope all goes well. We could have a Mastiff mafia!:D

Sorry, but i am totally for the boys i have two boy dogs now,i have always found that most of the boy dogs we have had have been more affectionate, but every dog is different, would also rather put up with a cocking the leg issue than a bitch in season although she can be be spayed but also a dog castrated.I have two entires and find they dont ever bicker and get along like a house on fire but they are farther and son,we have had two bitches living together in the past and it was constant bickering, but like i said every dog is different and i love my boys.x

With samoyeds the bitches are definately more 'with it' and easier to train, recall etc.
Our bitches have always been sneakier as well!

The dogs, I always describe as a mix of Scooby Doo and Yogi Bear, and I think that sums them up - dogs for me all the way as they are so dumb and silly!:D

Never had a bitch before but my 2 are both such mummies boys - I love that and don't think a bitch would be the same - could be wrong.

I also love a good tumtum rub but don't even notice the willies TBH

I always thought that bitches didn't cock their legs until we got our third bitch. She is most definatley a bloke  Even the boy doesn't cock his leg as often as she does... She doesn't care that it's unlady like :o:D

We have five dogs (may be six soon if you read my "Springadors!" post, he he!! We have four bitches (none of which are spayed, although we intend to have them all spayed within the not too distant future) plus one "snipped" male and I honestly have to say that our Large Munsterlander "snipped male" is the most adorable dog imaginable! Until he was snipped at a 11 months, he was horrible, to the point where I almost disliked him (really hate to admit it, but it's true) but since he has been "done" he has become so loving and loyal and literally the easiest dog imaginable. I spent ages walking with him around a large marquee at Badminton this year to escape from the torrential rain and one of the stall holders (as I passed her trade stand for about the third time!) commented that out of all the dogs she'd seen that day, he was the best behaved! I felt so chuffed! He doesn't pull, jump up, lunge at other dogs....he is perfect - I adore him! I can take him anywhere because he is so well behaved. My friend owns his brother and he was "snipped" at about two (they're now three years old) and he still hasn't calmed down and is quite a handful and disappears if she lets him off the lead!!! Yes, I love my bitches, but my boy wins hands down! Now, this Springador we're hoping to get............haven't made our minds up whether it'll be blue or pink!!!

Finally, my aforementioned friend who owns my dog's brother has an elderly chocolate lab who was kept in a garage and used for breeding until she was eight years old! She was offered to my friend (who takes in any waifs and strays!) and ended up being the oldest "puppy" in the puppy obedience class because she'd had literally no training - she wasn't even "clean"! Good luck with your bull mastiff rescue dog!

I've always had dogs. I didn't start out just looking at dogs but if looking for new dogs now I do. Having known a few people who have had bitches I have been put off by the mega fights that they have, seemingly out of nowhere. My dogs never fight (no one is allowed to shout or scream louder than me in my house!!;)) and there is usually 3 or 4 at a time. They do become two stone lighter as soon as the vet will do them so whether that makes a difference I don't know but they are all so easy.

Bitches all the way... though I really do love my little red boy. However, all the bitches I have ever had have always stuck close to my side at all times, whereas the boys (including my current one!) are always up for a wander and I can't take my eyes of them!. All were castrated (and early) but seem to be more independant - which is a pain because I can't just let them out of the car when doing my horse as they just won't stay put. All my bitches have stayed with me regardless of what I was doing but Blaze wants to go off and meet and greet everyone!
