Hi,

I want to buy some comfy riding boots and have used a pair of Dublin River boots to ride in before. Are they officially suitable for riding or should I get something else?

I also like the look of the Mountain horse high rider ii boot but they are a little over my budget.

Any advice would be great.

Thank you

yeah I used to ride in mine but get a boot horn!!! I didnt use one and within a few months the heel collapsed and the lining came away which meant it took about half an hour to get the bloody things on!

DO NOT BUY THEM!

I bought my first pair, and they started to fall apart after two weeks, so I thought "ok, I haven't looked after them well, I'll buy another pair".

Bought another pair, and they fell apart after about a month, despite the fact that I cleaned them religiously.

Rang Dublin to complain, and they said "It's not a work boot, it's more of a social boot".

A social boot!? *****.

Buy some Ariat Grasmeres if you want a pair of boots that you can work and ride in. Mine are still going strong after five years of mucking out the whole yard and riding up to ten a day.

Yup, I had the same problem with mine falling apart (a social boot, wtf!).

Also I found I couldn't ride in mine, tried it once and the top of the boot kept catching on the bottom of the saddle flap and I'd look like I was wearing 80's leg warmers as they crinkled round my ankles. Not a good look.

Thanks everyone. I just had a look at the Ariat Grassmeres and they are a little out my budget at the moment. I need something for about £100 or should I just get a yard boot and a riding boot?

If anyone can suggest any others that would be great.

I got mine back in 2009 as a good if you like social! boot. Found them sooo comfy could wear them all day every day. Have even been walking on Dartmoor in them.

Re. riding have recently started using them for that as my exercise boots broke and just had a big vets bill so can't really afford to get a new pair at the min. I find them comfy enough for riding but do find they lack a bit of ankle support. (but that could be down to the fact that they are a bit big on the leg due to my skinny chicken legs!!!!)

Katie, I have a pair of Toggi Hudson/Columbus boots (same boots, have seen them called both names), I've worn them pretty much every day for 3 years for mucking out, riding, dog walking, mooching at shows etc etc, and they have been brilliant. They are starting to crack a little around the toe, but they've had a hard life and I haven't really looked after them very well! Mine were about £100. I'll definitely be getting another pair when these eventually give up! x

I got a pair of ariat windermere's for £90 and they are fab way better than the dublin river's I had before and mega comfy :D

Def recommend Toggi - either the Calgary or the Canyon - £90-£110 waterproof & comfy for riding & yard work. We sell masses of them

I wouldn't buy another pair of River boots. I got mine in March and to be fair, I work on a yard 6 days a week so they are practically worn every day for most of the day...but they leak at the sides, the lining has come away at the heel, they bunch down at the ankle and they scuff very easily. Most of this was happening within a couple of weeks of buying them. Mine cost £100 so I will be looking for something else next time!

Agree the Ariat Windermeres are around the 100 pound mark but really fab, far better then the dublins. I ride, muck out, generally stomp about everywhere in mine - theyre super warm and waterproof

I am one of the few on HHO it would seem who has a pair of DRs which haven't come apart, inside or out, after 3+ years :)

They get worn everywhere, very comfy for riding I find and just beginning to look nicely lived now. Shabby in other words :D

I also have a pair of Toggi Canyons, can't say what they are like as I probably won't get around to wearing them for a while yet until the DRs are pts. I was recommended the Calgarys but think they look clumpy.

Sorry to Hi Jack your Thread
The Only "Waterproof that isnt" Country Boot that is WORSE than than the Dublin River Boot is the Sherwood Furlong Boot avoid both at all costs.

In this price range Toggi or Cabotswood the Cabotswood are better made than the Toggi Better quality Leather with a full under the foot waterproof sock the toggies are bonded which breaks down over time (My Toggi Hamiltons) and water runs down between the leather outer and the WP membrane and then comes up through the foot bed.

My Cabotswood Burfords have been Bullet proof but plug ugly (Not Tall Enough and too wide in the Leg They look a bit like site wellies) and a newer better looking version is due out at the end of this month. IMHO the Cabotswood is second to Dubarry that I wear for best.

All the others are just "social fashion boots with false claims made about their performance, and Alleged "Waterproofness"
Believe me I have tried and researched a lot of boots for a an online supplier Cabotswood state their boots are Waterproof not Splashproof (and do several styles up to size 8 but over that choice is a bit limited) which sums up so many alleged Waterproof boots. Everyone should Kick off about Manufacters false claims about their footwear.

I swear by my Toggi Hudsons - had them two years, and use them most days. Riding, yard stuff, dog walking, everything. Waterproof, keep my feet cool, and very different. Canvas type material at the top, then leather. No slipping down, and I use spurs when I need to on them. I will by another pair when these die.

I bought a pair of the rydale boots which look very similar in style to the dublin boots, I have had them over a year and can honestly say I have worn them at least 4/5 times a week to walk the dog, muck out and just generally wear them around the horses. They are not completely water proof as they will let your feet get damp if your walking through long wet grass after a while, I ride in mine if I am just going out for a 1 hour hack but if I was going out on a longer ride I would like more ankle support.
Mine still look in good nick and the tread still has plenty of life left in them, they might be worth considering as they were on the cheaper end of the boot market for country boot style, mine cost me about £70 and have been well worth the money.

I have the Sherwood Forest Dalton field boot as my main yard boot. Had them since last Christmas and they are still feel like new.

As for riding in them, going on normal hacks is absolutely fine in them (I actually found they pushed my heel quite nicely down as well :p)
Tried to jump in them once and they were alright, but given the option I'd go for my short boots/half chaps any day.

But they are suitable at the end of the day, and like I said, had them for a while now, worn almost every day apart from the height of summer, and still feel like new. Highly recommended and at the lower end of the typical country boot price.

Also, for some reason, they don't get mud stuck to them as easily as my mum's Toggi Canyon's do, and yet they are very grippy.

(can also get them cheaper from Ride-away at £88.99 but only in dark brown)

I've had my Dublin rivers for three years, ride in them , muck out, walk miles in them and they are brilliant .

I've done three hour hacks in them and they are fine and last well.

1s Pair let in water at rear Gusset day 1 second pair let in water at rear gusset day 1 third day left boot started to leak this is walking in wet grass.
Third pair letting water into both feet in less than 5 minutes alking in wet grass. but less at the rear gusset

These boots are claimed Fully waterproof to the top by Sherwood I think you got lucky or dont you wear them in the wet? which is what a waterproof country boot should be designed for!

Hmmm, I must have got lucky then, cause I'm constantly wearing them in the wet. Wore them all the time when it was flooded down the field after the wet weather earlier this year.
