are equine urine pregnancy tests accurate?

No, the vet can't change the outcome. But as a novice, first time owner I would suggest it may be £100 quid well spent for the professional confirmation (or otherwise), advice and piece of mind that they could give.

Second this!!! I was on a yard a few year short back where someone's mare had a BOGOF moment. Unfortunately the owners hadn't wanted to pay for a scan, it turned out to be twins, one of which died during an unassisted delivery.....may have turned out differently if they'd invested in the vet!

Unfortunately the second twin had to be put down a few months later due to deformities thought to be brought about by mineral deficiency and the mare didn't do too well either :-/

And all the New Forest ponies and Dartmoor ponies etc etc all have scans!! to be honest the above BOGOF by sound of it was prob too far gone to do anything other than abort by delivering or wait and pray. Twins scans need to be done very early to abort or try to kill one embryo. As for them not being present at the birth a scan would not have told them what time to expect delivery so still may not have been there and anyhow outcome would likely be the same as twins very rarely survive.

The young lady who is wondering about her recently purchased mare has passed the window to abort if twins anyway. At least she has noticed there may be something and is watching the mare and wondering so she will be prepared, she does not need people telling her she is lacking in her care.

I am not a first time owner/breeder and £100 a scan is a rip off. No-one takes into account that my mare was not too happy about having a probe were the sun does not shine so as I can do nothing to change if she is or is not now I am not going to spend another £100 and I think it is up to each owner to decide if they want to scan or not as long as mare is healthy. I may or may not get a healthy foal but a scan will not change the outcome. PS my mare has had 3 foals before in her lifetime. I also know the date of conception if there is one although as mares can go 3 weeks earlier or later than calculated date it is still going to be an element of guess work when a foal will actually arrive unless you have the facilities with cctv, mare and foal heart monitors etc. So guess us owners without these facilities and constant vet support should not be breeding.

To the young lady who started this post with her possible BOGOF that she recently bought she is doing a good job noticing and thinking what best to do - hope you have a lovely foal (or if you would rather she is not then hopefully the belly is grass :-D )

I managed to get a sample after many days of waiting and the rest read that she isn't in foal. I will be honest, I didn't want to get the vet and pay an extra call out when they are due to be coming anyway and if she was in foal, I read that it would be too late to abort one twin .
-toltecniranja. I was quite disappointed thatthe test read she isn't. Though I did guess the chances were slim :)

This is the problem those that mock getting the Vet in the op is now confident( I hope its not misplaced) their mare is not in foal on the basis of what at best can be described as quirky tests and at worst totally inaccurate all for the sake of getting an expert to check for little more than the cost of the urine test.I personally do not think this attitude of cutting corners does not show anybody has the horses best interest at heart. Good luck is all I can say. On the subject of twins maybe it is to late to pinch one out but you can certainly be more prepared for the outcome and potentially end the pregnancy early to cut out the risk . My argument is raising the subject on here has still not answered the question and how do you know what a pregnancy scan will cost without even asking your own vet ! most will negotiate an acceptable price you know, why wont people ask?
