Are Irish Draughts more prone to colic?

I joined this thread to make a point about TBxID's being prone to colic - based on personal experience - not to have a go at you. So don't flatter yourself babe.

Most people here appear to be polite and engaging, you on the other hand seem to be rather truculent and abrasive to everyone else.

And finishing a post with a smiley does not excuse you for being rude and contemptuous to other forum members.

Although I have noticed recently, how few breeds are Shils-Approved

, and am considering readmitting ID's to the list Providing they agree to stop decking me, and showing up my poor riding, of course.

I go back to my 60 horses - the vast majority of whom are IDs - and grey. In the last 6-7 years:
a 2 yo coloured sport horse with colic (my only coloured)
a 17 yo bay HW ID with colic (of about 6 bays - most under 5)
1 grey (20 year old) mare with colic. (and no melanomas!) I actually have NO greys with melanomas - and I have 6 greys over 14 years old!

I had an ID vetted once, the owner had said that she colicked on rich pasture and had to have her turnout restricted, but the vetting picked up melanomas which I was informed could have been the reason for the colic.

But then other breeds are predominantly grey too, a lot of Arabs for example. And yes, I know a grey Arab that colics badly. Should the question be, are greys more prone to colic?

Very interesting. I think you do raise a good point ...but as JanetGeorge says further down she hasnt had any greys with melanomas etc im not sure about colic being more prone to greys.

My share horse is grey and as far as I know in his 24 years hes never had colic...nor does he have melanomas (but we do check religiously!!

)
