Are Limpet Pads any good?

Looking for a good, shock absorbing pad for my pony as I have had his saddle professionally fitted however he has had bad back problems in the past and I want to prevent it from getting sore again. Any thoughts on limpet pads for this purpose?

I think for some horses they are very good .

I have found them useful for non slip on my rotund shetland but he was only in a cub sadde! I find they get quite sweaty underneath and the hair sticks right into the material so I wouldn't say i'd choose one for my riding horses.

Limpets are 10 or 20mm thickness so if he has had his saddle profesionally fitted it may actually alter that. Have you spoken to your saddler? Thin gelpad ontop of numnah or just a sheepskin numnah where the sheepskin is directly on the horses back may be a better option (not halfpad and numnah - too bulky for a saddle that hasn't been fitted to accomodate extra padding!)

I would say they get quite hot and although I did use one on a fat lead rein pony I didn't like it that much. Maybe for short periods as they do help saddle to stay put.

I love them, find the pads absorb sweat well, provide a good grip and the thicker version offers very good cushioning although I think they alter the fit of the saddle a bit too.

Sounds like you are wanting shock absorption rather than something to stop a correctly fitting saddle from slipping, and that you have had the saddle fitted without anything bulky underneath?If so, I would have thought a thinnish gel pad between the saddle and the saddlecloth would be the best bet.

For shock absorption I'd recommend sheepskin, Mattes is the best. Any thick pad will affect the fit so consult your fitter.
