Are mares really that bad?!

I love mares!!!!! My mares, below, are not mareish at all and are both really easy to have around. Despite my sig!!!!!My geldings are neurotic!!!

However I have had one mare who was horrid when in season. One look and you knew to keep away!!! During the first and last season of the year she was also very unreliable in traffic. One time, she jumped a five foot hedge with me to escape a lorry!!! She was only 13.2hh so this was no mean feat!!!!

She also hated strangers and would attack anyone she didnt know who tried to catch her. She would also defend all the other horses from strangers too!!!At least I knew no-one could steal her!!Once she knew you she was fine!!! Except when in season. In every other way she was a fantastic pony.

If I was in the market for a horse now I would definitely look at mares over geldings.

not moody but mine gets really fast and bucky but tis fun

Afetr 2 years we have got a really good bond, she isn't all that trustworthy of some people and can be jumpy, but she is a big softy with me and very affectionate.

Ellie is 'bossy' when she is in season. When I say bossy, she tends to do things like swing her head over yours without thinking and knocks you whereas normally she would be more careful.

She is a dreaful tart though

chattering her teeth and backing into her friend 'Star' with a comeon look on her face

However they have separated now since I moved yards so she is missing him dreadfully

She never bites or kicks people though and I totally trust her. But another horse come near her door and woe betide......he better be carrying roses and chocs or else

I have a mare, she can be moody, pull faces, have the odd paddy, but when shes nice, she is so so so so so lovely. I think that when you have spent time to build a relationship withb a mare, they will be on your side and they will do all they can to help you. Thats why my rs has all geldings, because they will act the same to most people.

Ask a mare...tell a gelding!

Or, as I heard it:

Tell a gelding, ask a mare, explain it nicely to a stallion....

or even, as one old codger once said, 'remember they're an entire and they won't brook being ordered about.'

They do make fantastic bonds if you click with them and will go the extra mile

We have four mares, two VERY old and two eleven year olds. They all have lovely personalities and are not marish. The younger ladies can get a bit silly when in season, and the appaloosas are true tarts, well the old one used to be! We have only had one gelding, who was never as giving as the mares. It is true that you have to ask a mare, even if it is in a firm tone of voice:)

I think its wrong to stereotype anything.
Each horse has its own personality traits. Some mares can be a little hormonal, as can us women. Some geldings can be very er..dominant? just like some men!

i woodnt b witout the mares ive had in my riding career. they aren't afraid to show me my mistakes, if i give them a wrong run up or bugger up a dressage move, they will happily refuse the jump or act like a twonk and it's taught me to ride i think better then i wood if i had a forgiving gelding . i now own a VERY relaxed mare who although i fell off TWICE today

is an absolute babe and not quite so much like my description above although she has her moments! x

I personally prefer geldings with character, but my old mare bless her was the best horse I could ask for, she was quite screwy but one of those horses of a lifetime.

I know a few tomboyish mares too though so I can't really say I prefer anything, all horses are different and it all comes down to whether I like a horse or not, regardless of what it is.

Ive always had geldings, but have had 2 mares. Both were stroppy! Although saying that, one of them was also the most intelligent, nice natured horses Ive ever had! They are stroppy sods though, Im a gelding person definately.

I had a chestnut mare who a tiny child could have ridden despite her being 15.2hh. She was very very gentle. She did pull faces occassionally when being groomed if she was in season. The only time she ever actually but anyone was due to arthritis because the farrier was rough with her.

I've a chestnut mare. She's very sensitive but also sweet, cuddly and loving. Tell her she's beautiful and give her a hug and she goes doe-eyed!

Never moody but she doesn't like horses around her and will kick if they come too close (though never like this out in the field). Most people say that's her being a moody mare. I don't agree. She was very nervous of any horse coming up behind her or past her in a practice ring when she was a youngster and used to take off. I believe the grown-up version of that is not to bolt but to kick out if any horse intrudes her personal space. She pins her ears back and looks evil.

She wouldn't dream of doing that to a human
