My riding partner suffered quite a bit a first .... the Cantle is the problem .... or is it your 'bits'

He wore cycling shorts and soon mastered it and 7 or so years later never complains

Well not about that aspect of horses anyway

I second that, my OH wears two pairs of hideous brief type of things under his breeches, last time he did get a blister on his bum from the VPL rubbing!!!!

Hi and Welcome! DO NOT wear jeans, that will be painful, wear jogging bottoms or something similar before you invest in breaches, theres no point in spending money on the clothing if you dont enjoy it, Have fun!!

Good on you thinkin of takin up horse riding!

Any pain will soon disappear and you will start to enjoy horse riding! Although being female i cant guarantee that

(he he he)

Get some padded pants lol

Just get on with it, it soon wears off after all feeling has been knocked out of them, def wear tight undies to stop bouncing balls syndrome.

Hound, fancy asking all these 'ladies' a question like that! You need to read around this forum! They are breaking you in gently

Nice tight Y fronts are good, or as someone else suggested, cycle shorts. Running / hiking bottoms, like Ron Hill tracksters are Ok to start with, but not jeans, too many seams! Ebay is really good for jodhpurs, and if you decide to stick at riding, you will need at least one pair ASAP.

In answer to part of your question, yes, you are going to bruise your plums to start, especially as your instructor screams things like "sit up straight...heels down....get those legs BACK....". But, you will get used to it pretty quickly and find a good riding position that does not make your eyes water.

Where to start is a good question. Tell folks here approximately where you are and I'm sure they will be able to suggest a riding school or two.

Finally, welcome to the equestrian world, you will find yourself a rare thorn amongst so many roses (you'll be the only bloke at your yard).

nah he won't be the only bloke. On my yard theres 6 with their own horses then another 4 or 5 who don't own horses but help their OH's out.

I met my OH on the yard

He whimpers and complains about seams on jeans, so go for jods, although I ride in jeans often to hack out etc and don't have a problem.

You will wonder why horsey girls can spend hours watching horses do the same thing, if you get a horse, do what my OH does...we take both cars to the yard, or he goes to do other jobs while I faff on the yard.

A GOOD saddle, that fits you and the horse is a must if you buy your own horse. OH's new horse came with a teeny tiny saddle, that I at 5ft7 struggled to get my legs in, he, as a novice bloke at 5ft11 found it the most painful thing in the world!!

Do enjoy it, don't get scared off by the female dominated world, on the hole their bark is worse than their bite.

Hiya and welcome to the forum Hound

I hope you decide to stick with learning to ride as believe me it is so worth it.
There is some very good advice on this thread about men and their bits banging and I am certainly picking up some useful tips to give my other half who is now more interested in the riding side of things since we have moved yards. But he did complain about banging his balls the other day as it was his first ride on a horse since May last year and he is a novice anyway ( only 4th time on a horse) but does seem a natural luckily.

undoubtedly they are, unless they are stainless steel or extremely small! The pommel and one's balls react together something like those bats you get with the balls attached by a bit of string, boing, boing, boing.

However, all good fun, bouncing around on horseback! Your dooh-dahs will harden up (so to say) to it and you'll find a comfy poisition. Do NOT wear boxer shorts, I've tried all forms of undies and the tighter the better!!!!!!

Mind you, I'm too lazy to do a rising trot so I just bounce with the horse, Wife keeps telling me I should make the effort though!
