I just took my two 16 month old JRT's to the park, and threw a ball for them. Usually the dog, over does it and ends up exhasuted but today was a bit of a disaster really.

My bitch Lil ended up with her back leg fully pulled up to her body, not as if she was holding it up but as if it was the ligament pulling it right up, I massaged her back leg muscles and it came back down - is there anything i can do to prevent this happening? Is it likely to be a trapped nerve or ligament??

Then, my dog, watches me massaging Lil and keels over right next to her, tongue lolling out and chest going ten to the dozen, he wouldn't get up so i had to carry him home,he was as limp as a dead dog over my arm, where I treated him as if he had heatstroke (put him straight in the bath and poured lots of cild water over his chest and neck.

He is now Ok, but what is going on? These are two fit little blighters who both decided today was as good a day as any to give mum a heart attack. They are fed on either JWB or Burns and have plenty of access to fresh water.

Help please im worried about them

Sounds like you did the right thing with both of them. It may just be a one off but if it happens again i would take them too the vets. My lab used to do what you dog did, but only her back end would go, it was later diagnosed as some kind of fit!!

The first dog: could she have dislocated her patella? The leg gets stuck out because the knee does not work. It generally tends to pop itself back in, although the vet can manipulate it back in place if needed.

The second dog: do you think he might have been jealous and trying to get your attention, or did he look genuinely in distress? Maybe he overtired himself and I would not worry unless he does it again.

Luxating patellas are very common in small breeds. Most dogs it doesn't affect, but it might be worthwhile having your vet take a look at the leg to assess the grade, and whether it's a bilateral issue (genetic) or unilateral (injury).

As for your other RT, how was the weather today?

It was warm, but it was 10am, so not that warm yet.

I did consider that he was just acting up, but he was literally limp in my arms and his chest was pumping so hard I doubted it.

Will look up the luxating patella problem!
