Are the natural headcollars worth buying in peoples opinons?
My horse is having trouble loaded and a couple of people have mentioned natural headcollars work really well...?
Is this right..?

Sorry to state the obvious, but a headcollar will only be a tool to assist the process. Have you tried reading any of the Kelly Marks books? I have had good success with her methods.

The natural rope halters like parelli will apply poll pressure to get a little more compliance out of your horse which could help in loading. The Monty Roberts Dually tightens across the nose, but also has a normal ring under the chin for tying up.

I would never tie up in a natural rope halter as it would be too severe if the horse pulled back, so you would need a standard headcollar to change your horse into once loaded.

I think they are both worth having, the natural rope halters are a lot cheaper than the Dually if you buy the non branded type.

wouldn' spend 50 quid (the dually ) on one-get a nice rope halter for less than 10 quid, or make one

thanks - I was taught the natural horsemanship manners when I working in the us 8 yrs ago. Im really quiet and easy going but my horse just flipped quite unexpectively in the trailer at the weekend....so I just wanted a pressure headcollar so he doesnt hit his head or raise his head which seemed to make him more nervous....

I fed mine when he loaded well the first time and he loved it....the problem was we were hurried to get loaded and move on from the event - so this didnt help....there were also about 10 people behind him with crossed ropes pushing him on....
It was very frightening when he reared inside the trailer....in fact I broke my thumb !! so I want to take it slowly and steady hope a pressure halter would help him and make him less likely to pull upwards...

Do you mean rope halters? These are used all the time over here. They cost about $8 and everyone has loads of them. I like them; I used to walk my stallion out in his all the time and he was impeccably behaved. I wouldn't say they are particularly strong but they do give you more control than just a headcollar.

Over here we tie in them, leave them on in the fields and many people leave them on attached to 10ft ropes, specifically for horses who are difficult to catch, or have issues with freaking out when they stand on something. Seems to work although I've never had to use them in this manner as mine just don't seem to freak at anything.

I would think a rope halter would be a good thing for you to have as they are so cheap that even if it was no good control-wise, you could still use it for catching up etc.

I have got a pressure halter, for use on both my boys, I can't lunge Buddie in a bridle cos he just p$$e$ off in it but the pressure halter is brill, he can't run away!
They are very good for loading if used right.

buy either a rope halter...usually white...

or make your own, like me, out of BT line feed rope....!!

I echo the rope halter. I was cynical to start with but

Had a napping problem with my mare - solved it
Had a rushing problem (same mare - they can be so contrary) and rope halter gave me more control

Had willful foalie - used one & she now leads like a dream.

Got mine for £4 off ebay

We've used rope halters for years, cattle halters cost about £3, not as sharp on your hands if they do pull through at all as thinner rope.

I use knotted rope halters and, when used correctly, work extremely well. You can make one yourself if you are any good at tying knots, just get some yachting rope.

Here's how to make one.......hmmm...sorry, the web page has been deleted

I have a knotted rope halter type thing- its been brilliant for red, who barges and I also lunge him off it. Mine was off ebay for about £3.

Rope headcollars are fab and quicker to use than buckles!

I have some really knackered ones i bought from Canada on eBay for £4 each!!! However Shires now do one for aorund £8 and you can get them from loads of places.

I wouldn't be paying more than £15 for a rope one and even then, that would be for marine grade rope with a very nice finish!!!
